What's a game you had fun playing, but realized the story/plot was poor?

(I apologize if this post has already been done)

Assassins Creed is a great blend of stealth and action, but when the Ubisoft moneymen wanted to squeeze more money, they made the worst "Ancient Aliens" horseshit that even the average History Channel show producer would call fanfic-tier to barely tie everything together.

And to make things worse, they fuck up important historical events and people to make the story bend to their terrible writing. And the story following the actual main characters sucks really hard, with Rogue being the only one I could find actually interesting.

In summary, i'm gonna put it in a way Ubisoft can understand: Va te faire foutre, votre écriture est de la merde.

The X-com remake games are pretty fun, but the story is pretty bare bones and generic. While I think this applies to a lot of strategy based games since part of the appeal is being open ended, which typically means the story has to take a backseat, but with X-com especially it feels like any story elements were hastily put together in an afternoon before the game(s) released.

It's too bad because I think you could combine some story elements with the strategy gameplay, namely in having to make diplomatic choices with the other factions. It sounds like their newest game has a bit more story focus to it, so maybe it'll carry over into the main series whenever they make an official sequel.

I don't think I'd call them "great" but the recent South Park games had surprisingly decent gameplay, especially for a game based on a show. Even the basic story idea wasn't terrible, but the actual writing itself wasn't particularly great or funny. I think I'd honestly enjoy the game more if it was a more generic RPG about kids basically doing elaborate LARP stuff. Kind of in the same vein as Chroma Squad/Knights of Pen and Paper.

  • Elder Scrolls (except Morrowind but only a few points actually)
  • Final Fantasy 7 Remake (Putting a Kingdom Hearts-eske plot finally killed the original sense)
  • Metal Gear Solid V (In that Kojima literally goes insane, more than in Peace Walker)
I can't remember more.

Kingdom Hearts. Before with the first game it was just a simple good vs evil story, but between all the sequels and prequels explaining soooooooo much plot and character background, it just became a big confusing web of shit.

Also the "Disney" part in Kingdom Hearts don't even matter or add anything relevant to the story other than the "princesses of heart" part, which even that is just glossed over, so it makes one wonder why they didn't just make this like a side series to the Final Fantasy universe or something.

Kingdom Hearts is like everything awful and good about JRPG's in one series

Red Dead Redemption 2. The individual chapters are okay (except for all of Chapter 5, which can suck my ass) but the overarching plot is ruined by the fact that the majority of characters are idiots, and that since the game is a prequel, the plot of the first game still has to happen. Even if the events leading up to that are really, really stupid and contrived.

And obviously, Final Fantasy XV. Even though I love the game, the pacing is god awful, the plot makes no sense because most of it is in other media, and not the game itself, and Lunafreya is one of the worst love interests in any video game. Seriously, Noctis has more chemistry with his cellphone than he does his actual fiancee.

Mega Man X4 is my favorite Mega Man X game, but it's easily got the most fucking retarded story I've ever seen. The whole thing never would have happened if Repliforce complied with X and Zero, and their reasons for not disarming make no sense. It's the very essence of the Idiot Plot. And yeah, no one plays Mega Man X for the story, but even in a series with crap storytelling, X4 is remarkably stupid.

Still fun as hell though.

King of Dragons is my fav Beat 'em up and the plot is basically "The red dragon and his minions are bad mmmmkay". Now that I think of it, a lot of old Beat 'em ups might end up in this thread.

Fallout 4 w/ bare minimum of 100 mods/additions/overhauls. Makes the gameplay better but the "where's mah boi?" storyline is flat and underdelivered; one should also consider the lack of urgency with getting distracted (sidequests, building, etc) from such a plot.
You would think finding your kid who's been snatched by an unshaven biker-creep with mysterious motives would be time sensitive in the least.
