Inspired by the AFI's "100 years, 100 heroes/villains" thing a decade back, I decided we should have a thread to sperg about what fictional heroes and villains we find the best written, the best acted, the best concieved, and the most effective in the works they are in, from the master from Manos to Profion in dungeons and dragons, to Johnny from the room to Zap Rowsdower in final sacrifice, who is your favourite hero and who is your favourite villain and why is that so?

Harvey Dent. He's my favorite Batman villain and I loved his portrayal in the Dark Knight--in fact, I really don't think Aaron Eckert got enough credit for his performance. Part of this is just because he was overshadowed by the Joker, and Heath Ledger's subsequent death. I really wish that they could have brought him back for the third film instead of introducing Bane.

nurse-ratched.jpg

Nurse Ratched. A terrible human being who runs her psychiatric ward with an iron fist and routinely abuses her patients. Pity that Jack wasn't able to finish the job . .

Dwight_.jpg

And then Dwight. He's the closest thing The Office has to a villain.

Annie Wilkes has got to be one of my favourite villains due to her sheer believability. From reading the book I had a different image of her in my head, but Kathy Bates still does a damn good job of being a crazy psycho bitch obsessive fangirl ex-nurse lady. Both Annies for me are scary as shit.

I've got to agree with GrandNumberOfPounds in that I too have a soft spot for Frollo; he's my favourite Disney baddie for the simple fact that he really is just a man and not an unrealistic fanstastical/power crazed/evil for the sake of being evil figure of doom and all things unfranchisey and totally not cute. A man with frustrations and insecurities that he justifies clumsily through religion and displaces onto other people, a man in a fortunate enough position of power that he can realistically get away with murder to again justify these hangups, a man with few scruples as well as a huge chip on his shoulder and a gaping lack of empathy...but just a man.

I really need to see Misery. ...but then I either forget or chicken out.

I agree with the Frollo one. He really is a good villain. He's not an evil wizard, but a man. Humans can be monstrous, and I think that worked VERY well in this case. Especially with using religion to justify everything and blames others, as you said. "It's not my fault I'm lustful towards her! She used witchcraft!"

I thought Gothel was a good Disney villain as well. Like Frollo, she's just a (wo)man. Not a super powerful witch. However, to make up for it, she's very cunning and uses it to dangerous effect. She also kidnapped a baby. She knew how to play people, and she manipulated Rapunzel repeatedly to make sure she never left the tower. "You're useless without me!" and so on. Unlike what a former friend believed, she was also irredeemable. She was selfish and cruel to the end. Her abusiveness and cruelty was masked by a sweet, motherly guise and some of it was even passed off as her being a good mother.

General Grievous is the most badass, non-Force using villain in Star Wars. He's so powerful, he took on seven Jedi, four of them masters and won. He hunts Jedi for sport and takes their lightsabers as trophies. Even before he was Jedi slaying, he was a warrior. He fought in a war against giant mantis aliens. Anyone who mentions that shitty CGI Clone Wars and what it did to Grievous is dead to me.

Just remembered another fantastic villain - Lehiff from the movie Intermission.

I don't really need to say much about this, instead I'm just going to show you his introduction to the film -

On a more serious note, my favorite villain of all Time might be Zeus from Disney's Hercules.

Don't know where to put these entries, as antagonistic/unreliable protagonists fall somewhere between heroes and villains, but my favorite has to be Rob Fleming/Gordon from any version-book, film, or musical-of High Fidelity. I identify very strongly with his confusion and listlessness. And John Cusack and Will Chase create such different yet vibrant characters from the same source material.

Bane: I like how Nolan made him a representation of who Bruce could've been if he'd stuck with the League of Shadows. The social revolution plotline was also nice. His death was appropriate for a larger-than-life demagogue.

Prince Nuada Silverlance: His character was an interesting inversion of the stereotype of elves as a dying/fading race.

Ramsay Bolton: Recreating the circumstances of his conception, combined with his sick sense of humor, make him a dark delight to read about.

Euron "Crow's Eye" Greyjoy: I get a sinister vibe from this guy. Considers himself one of the godliest men out there, since he's made countless men and women go weeping before their gods.

Stannis Baratheon: Bookwise, at least. He's the only self-styled king that's getting anything done. He's kicking ass and taking names in the North. I'm looking forward to his attack on the Boltons at Winterfell.

Roland Deschain: I admire his determination and willingness to pursue his goal.

@Da Pickle Monster: Two-Face is my favorite villain from TDK.

In terms of villains:
Warmaster Honsou from the Ultramarine novels and short stories by Graham McNeill. That guy is bad news.
Judge Death is a childhood favorite of mine.
Also, Ultron and The Dread Dormammu from Marvel comics (The Purple Man is under-appreciated as well).
Black Adam from pre-New 52 DC comics, The Mist and Brainiac were amazing as well.
Megatron/Galvatron
The xenomorph from the original Alien

Heroes:
Roy Focker and Max Sterling from Robotech
Batman from TAS and the Justice League cartoons (to me, that will always be the quintessential Batman even though I did read a shit ton of the comics)
Judge Dredd, even though I don't agree with what he stands for.
Jack Knight Starman (from Starman Vol. 2) and Wesley Dodd Sandman (from Sandman Mystery Theater)
Dr. Strange
Lion-O

I know a lot of my shit comes from cartoons and comic books, but all the actual novels and stuff I read have so much moral grey area and for lists like this, I tend to stick to the more well-defined heroes and baddies.

Oh I was going to post this. I saw it posted somewhere before on this forum! Sooo funny. I need to find a way to get ahold of the whole thing.

Oh and as far as Disney villains go I don't think you can beat Scar from Lion King. He's just evil.

But overall baddies, I go with this guy:

Concerning villains, I'm partial to Ruber from Quest for Camelot. He kills the protagonist's father, flirts with her mother, threatens to kill her in front of said mother, punches a dragon in the face, fuses Excalibur with his arm, and dies laughing. That's aces in my book.

Freeza was great as a DBZ villain, probably the best of the entire series.

Also, Mr. Pete. He really gave my dad a hard time back in the '90s, I tell ya what

I showed my favorite villains, so now it's time to show my favorite heroes:

punishermax4.jpg

Frank Castle, The Punisher. The biggest badass of the Marvel Universe. A Vietnam vet who watched his family murdered in Central Park, Frank became the Punisher and started a one-man war on organized crime.

Favorite moment: in the Punisher Max series, when Frank executes a pair of pedophiles/child sex film traffickers, and then infamously announces, "sometimes I'd like to get my hands on God."

Least favorite moment: when the Punisher goes crazy and commits suicide and is then resurrected as a holy weapon toting angelic agent who is dedicated to undoing his prior crimes. Yes, this happened in the "Punisher: Purgatory" miniseries, and thankfully Garth Ennis managed to undo it with "Welcome Back, Frank."

Next favorite hero:

r1.jpg

Rorschach from The Watchmen.

Walter Kovacs grew up in a home full of abuse and neglect, which led to him developing a very polarized view of the world. He eventually became the crime-fighter known as Rorschach. But his transition wasn't complete until he investigated the kidnapping of a little girl--and it was in that moment that he "felt planet turn under my feet and knew what cats know that makes them scream like babies in night . . . was Rorschach."

Favorite moment: when he catches up with the little girl's murderer, handcuffs him inside in an abandoned dress shop, douses everything with kerosine and then watches it burn.

Least favorite moment: In the film adaptation when he just chops the guy up with a meat cleaver instead. This is tied with his portrayal in "Before Nite Owl," where he manages to get captured by an obese Pentecostal minister.

Next favorite hero:

EscapeFromNY-007.jpg

Lieutenant Snake Plisskin from "Escape from New York." Snake was a soldier turned renegade who gets dropped into a quarantined New York because he IS a bad enough dude to save the President. After that, he then goes to LA and does much the same before EMPing the entire world into a new stone age. Kurt Russell's portrayal of the character later went on to serve as the character model for Big Boss/Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid series.

Favorite moment: When Snake manages to take out a giant in weapons-based combat.

Least favorite moment: When Snake surfs into LA with Steve Buscemi.

Final favorite hero:

1332934-robocop.jpg

Robocop. You know Robocop! Alex Murphey was murdered by gang members and then Frankenstein'ed into the ultimate answer to law enforcement.

Favorite moment: When Robocop storms the crack factory in the first film with the triumphant Robocop theme blaring and takes out everybody and then beats the shit out of Clarence Boddicker.

Least favorite moment: Robocop 2.
