So recently Rockstar and Take Two Interactive decided to give their hacking problem a swift kick up the bum, once and for all. They are attempting this by sending cease and desist letters to the creators of many popular mod makers and tool-makers that they believe were responsible for causing the massive malignant tumour that is hackers in GTA Online.
Many mod-makers were hit with these claims, with Take Two seemingly not wishing to discriminate between singleplayer-only mods and online mods. Though it makes a lot of financial sense to perform such scorched earth banning tactics over individually singling out special snowflake mods that dindu nuffin, it proved to be a very controversial move when the developers of OpenIV (one of the core methods of modding GTA V that they '''promise''' only works in singleplayer) were hit with this very same notice.

Of course, Rockstar are perfectly allowed to do whatever the fuck they want with GTA, as per their EULA:

Naturally, though, the player base completely lost it's shit, spilling enough spaghetti to flood a small village on Reddit.
It's not just Reddit, though. The Steam review page has been absolutely hammered, with the game's overall reviews now dropping down to "Mixed" and the Recent ratings falling straight into the shitter, all from people who already paid for Rockstar's game that are annoyed over Rockstar doing what they want to their own game.
The salt flows, with many people making complaints about other parts of the game that for some reason they didn't want to voice until right now. Really makes one think:
Also, complaints about having to actually play the game to unlock stuff in the game (how dare they?!?):
There's even a petition going around urging Take Two to bring back their precious mods. I doubt the petition will really go anywhere.

To top if off, many YouTubers who have hardly played GTA or have modded GTA for months decided to come out in droves to sperg and complain about this fiasco, presumably to make a quick buck:
Including one of our very own lolcows, Jim Sterling:
Needless to say, there is a lot of salt to be mined about this.

With plans to uninstall the game...
...to brigading the Steam page for GTA V...

...to planning on committing a crime to get a game where you commit crimes...
...to forming conspiracy theories when someone dares to say that it's not Rockstar's fault...
...looks back into some less-successful games
...and so on and so forth
