Gun Control -

While we're on the topic of guns, has anyone noticed a growing trend in racists picking up a gun and spraying people en masse? Last decade, there were at least 31 mass shootings (and attempted mass shootings) worldwide due to racists, white supremacists and Neo-Nazis (and that's not counting the foiled terror plots). Mass shootings have kinda always been dominated by right-wingers, but it's been ramping up recently.

Elliot Rodger was more a sexist or misogynist than a racist. Christopher Harper-Mercer sounds like a incel for his motivations. Also list ignores to include the Las Vegas shooter and the Pulse Club shooter. Also some of the people listed have pathetic kill counts to be considered a mass shooting for a normie to remember. Anders Brevik, Stephen Paddock, Omar Mateen, Brenton Tarrant are the only big names people will definitely remember.

I agree with your general point, but you should know better, being on an autism hive like this, than to call Saint Elliot a Rightist. He had no coherent political ideology. He didn't self-identify as an incel even though he was the spitting image of one. He didn't hold any principled PUA, MRA, or any other three-letter acronym views. Elliot's worldview began and started with "I PERSONALLY am a victim and the world should serve ME to give ME, SPECIFICALLY pussy." He preached that if he, HIM SPECIFICALLY, couldn't get a girlfriend, nobody should have one.

Rodgers wasn't an ideologue. He was a raving narcissistic loon. Calling him a Rightist is the dumbest fucking spin I have ever heard.

Your use of the word "racist" is incorrect, "racist" is not a synonym of "bigoted".
Also over half of his victims weren't shot.

As for Chris Harper-Mercer.

You can stop right there, if you can't go on the record and prove your opinion over 4 years after something happened you are full of shit.
If you are a news organization and can't prove this kind assertion you need to be closed.

Regardless of Constitutional debate and interpretation, a truly free nation is one that not only allows, but outright requires, every citizen to be armed with a modern fully automatic rifle. But what about grenades, mortars, missiles, tanks, gases, and incendiaries? There has to be a reasonable line of give and take when it comes to the people and it's government. That reasonable line ends at fully-automatic rifles, just before grenades or other devices of a similar nature. It's doubtful that the majority of the people who say every citizen should be allowed access to that level of weaponry are sincere in their opinion. That's the fine line of chaos.

On the other hand, fireworks shouldn't be banned anywhere, but they should be slightly more regulated than they are currently.

Really, the only ones who really were dedicated ideological right-wingers and not just raving loons going postal and their ideology serving as an ad hoc justification for their spree killing are Brevik and Tarrant. We don't know what Paddock's motive was, the Vegas shooting is wrapped up in a lot of mystery and misinformation to the point that even the MSM didn't have much to say on Paddock's motives and ideology.

You also have explicitly left-wing mass shooters (Castle Rock, Dayton), Islamist mass shooters (Pulse Nightclub, San Bernadino), and black supremacists (Christopher Dorner, Micah Xavier Johnson)

Most mass shootings are spree killings, no different than Charles Whitman or the disgruntled postal workers in the 80's. We've had documented mass shootings in this country since the 1950's, and the number increases if you include gang-related shootings.

The key difference between now and then is the modern media has created this strange dark mystique around mass shooters starting with Columbine, and a copycat effect has resulted from it.

The increase of AR-15 variants as the weapon of choice is a direct result of this copycat effect thanks to the sensationalist coverage of Sandy Hook. Before 2012, the preferred weapon of choice for mass shooters were usually semi-automatic pistols, with shotguns in second place.

Some of these spree killers may have a limited ad hoc ideological motive like with Dylann Roof, Maya McKinney, or Elliot Rodger, but they are the kind of spree killers who have a pathology that can best be summed up as "if it wasn't (insert motive here) that made them snap, it'd just be something else instead"

Connor Betts was an avowed leftist with ties to local Antifa groups, but his rampage in Dayton was a classical textbook spree killing with no real political undertones and no rhyme or reason.

The only ones who really were avowed political terrorists would be Anders Brevik, Brenton Tarrant, Omar Mateen. and possibly Stephen Paddock.

All of their attacks were carefully planned months or years in advance and tended to have a much higher body count as a result.

Among others. As for other methods right-wingers have been using would be truck rammings (James Fields, Darren Osborne and an unidentified 43-year-old Armenian man in France who attempted to ram his car through a crowd of worshipping Muslims outside a mosque) and mass stabbings (Anton Lundin Pettersson, Jeremy Christian, Mitchell W. Adkins).

No control at all. If someone has the money to buy a tank they have the right to do so. There have been plenty of examples in the real world where gun control leads to confiscation which leads to people dying.

The argument that "the founding fathers would have never expected ... blah blah blah" doesn't have merit. The problem comes when the state and the average Joe have unequal access to weapons. Tyranny always follows.

I agree with this for the most part. Except for cases of people buying them off Tor's black market sites. All one really has to do to obtain a firearm in a cuck country is to simply go online, download the Tor browser, get a Bitcoin wallet, search the Deep Web for stolen credit card information (assuming they're unemployed NEETs) so that they can then fill their Bitcoin wallets with digital money so that they can then go on a black market site and buy a gun and have it sent straight to their mailing address, assuming that the site is legit and not a honeypot or a scam. No background check needed there.

This was posted by my university.

Seventeen people killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida; 12 shot to death at a bar hosting a student line-dancing night in Thousand Oaks, California; 11 killed when a man opened fire in the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; 10 dead in a shooting at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas; four deaths at a Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago; three dead at a Madden ’19 video game competition in Jacksonville, Florida –– and those are just a few of the incidents from 2018. Hearing such news and participating in active shooter trainings in schools, workplaces and public venues have become part of everyday American life. But, rather than getting used to mass shootings, what can we do to stop them?

Garen Wintemute, M.D. ’77, a professor of emergency medicine and director of the Violence Prevention Research Program (VPRP) at UC Davis, is the Big Idea champion for the Center for Violence Prevention Research. Wintemute has devoted his life to studying the effects of violence after seeing countless patients in the emergency room –– many of whom suffered firearm wounds.

“Mass shootings really hit home for people,” said Wintemute. “You can put distance between yourself and other forms of violence by proximity or demographics. You can pawn it off as something that’s not your problem. Mass shootings are different; you recognize that this could actually happen to you, and it could happen at any of the normal places you go, like the mall, movie theater or place of worship.”

One of the primary ways mass shootings and acts of violence can be prevented is through enhanced background checks for gun ownership –– but many states don’t have strict background check policies.

Wintemute noted he has been present at gun shows where he has seen a gun sale or transaction occur in less than a minute –– without any sort of background check. He added that 22 percent of all firearm transfers nationwide proceed without a check being done. And some states that have regulations in place don’t enforce them.

With comprehensive background-check policies, most private-party transfers would be required to be routed through a licensed retailer so that a check may be conducted and records kept.

Applying the science of violence prevention
Many advocates say they see a parallel to the 1950s, when automobile crashes and related deaths were a national epidemic. As a result of research-driven regulations and social change, motor vehicle-related mortality significantly declined.

“It’s clear science has a role to play here,” he said. “We can use scientific data to inform public policy, which can reduce rates of violence. I’m positive we can accomplish this; we just need the opportunity to do it.”

VPRP’s work has been aided by UC Davis’ proximity to Sacramento, along with the willingness of the state legislature to invest in violence research, implement policy and follow up on results.

“The legislature and policymakers ask us to inform them on what the science says we should do, and when we make recommendations, they often act on them,” Wintemute said. “They even follow up to be sure that the effects of what we did are what we think they’re going to be. There’s no other place where this level of collaboration exists.”

Proven effective interventions
An added layer of legislation, which has already proven to be effective, are gun violence restraining orders, also called extreme risk protection orders. These court orders allow firearms to be temporarily seized from individuals in crisis, or can even be used to prevent firearm purchases. California was the one of the first states in the country to adopt this particular legislation, and 14 states total have implemented this measure.

“I am aware of a series of potential mass shootings in California that were thwarted because of a gun violence restraining order,” Wintemute said. “Had one been available in Parkland, Florida, the woman Nicolas Cruz lived with, or local law enforcement, could have gone to a judge to request it and potentially saved many lives.”

Multiple polls suggest the vast majority of Americans support new firearms policies. According to the third National Survey of Gun Policy conducted in 2017 by the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research, about 87 percent of gun owners and non-owners support universal background checks. About 77 percent support gun violence restraining orders. In an article he wrote for the New England Journal of Medicine, Wintemute said these systems in place aren’t geared toward “gun control,” but are viewed as part of the response to a public health crisis.

“The policies discussed aim to uncouple harmful behavior from its consequences and help preserve our fundamental right to live safely in a free society,” Wintemute said. “Mass shootings are changing the character of public life in the United States and creating unprecedented demand for action –– and there are scientifically proven steps we can take to stop them.”
