I don't know how I feel, and frankly, I'm not holding my breath. I feel like there's a good chance of this being awful, but we'll see. What do you guys think?

I think it's funny that after so long if King saying "fuck that", he looked at this, and said "hm...okay".

It seems like someone directed Matthew McConaughey to be as stereotypically evil sounding as possible. He just sounds so corny. Idris Elba is good as always though.

I agree that the production design is rather bland as well and lifeless. I always got this weird, ethereal sense from the books. Just seems like generic post-apocalyptic land.

I was under the impression that it was the convoluted logistics of Movie->TV->Movie or whatever crazy shit they were bouncing around was the big delay.

I don't know much about the books other than how the ending does that thing, but a friend who's read some of the first one said it looks like they're covering more than just the first book?
Maybe it's like LotR where they dropped "and then they fucked around in the Shire for a couple of years after Frodo disappeared" type content?

I think it would have been better as an HBO series, without any movies. Also, it looks like it's the first three books jammed into this movie.

I actually do have a problem with them making Roland black and here's why.

One of Roland's allies in the books is a women named Susana who has multiple personalities and one of them is a racist black militant who hates white people. Her learning to let go of her hate and accept Roland as a friend is a fairly big part of the story but I can understand why they chose to go this route. Can you imagine the shitstorm if Hollywood admitted black people can be racist?

That would clearly be white bigot males shaming the disabled in order to spread fake news.

Well, Zeus in Die Hard With A Vengence comes to mind...and Stephen from Django Unchained.

I'm fine with Idris Elba playing the gunslinger, mostly because I'm a huge fan of his. So I'm rather anxious to see this movie.

I'm really, really worried that this will be shit. The production design looks 100% generic sci-fi-fantasy. But this is a universe with an ancient possessed train as a major antagonist. There's no weird dirty charm to any of the environments or character designs and giving Roland badass one-liners seems out of place. Where's the weird accents? Also I get why you gotta get Matthew McC in there since he probably helped this get made, but it feels like showing the Man in Black right away is showing him way too early. In the book's he's a nebulous presence that you only see through the actions he's already taken, he's not so much a monologing supervillain.

It looks like it could go either way. I have to say, Matthew McC seems really good so far. You don't often seen him playing a villain, but he does it so naturally (from what I've seen in the trailer). Personally, I'm looking forward to it
