Even if the gun is gunked to hell and all you can do is FA in one round and then have to smack the rifle on the ground to get it out there are situations where being able to shoot that one round can sane your life.

That's the A#1 reason why I don't like ARs; not being able to apply a boot or mallet to the charging handle when it stopped extracting at the exact worst moment, while not having enough room/cover to really slam it straight down.

I wouldn't say it almost got me killed, because I still had my ring-mounted SAW; but needing to suddenly rely on a temperamental 249 took the fun out of it.

Not really; it was just yet one more time Murphy decided to remind me of his hatred.

We had pulled up to block a "Y" intersection, while the convoy made a hard turn, and I had the ringmount 249 (behind an old-school chicken plate) oriented towards the front; essentially covering the rear and leapfrogging with the charley guntruck.

About half the convoy made the turn when it got engaged by haji taking potshots (on our six).

I brought up my ratty A2; mainly to keep the armor plate at my back, and the SAW wasn't a good thing to use blindly where we were, in a fairly busy part of Balad). I got off about a half dozen aimed shots, and it stopped extracting. Right about then my armor plate started taking hits, and I had to drop down to deal with the rifle.

Because of all the shit in the back of our HMMWV, cases of MREs, gear, water, ammo cans, etc, I didn't have any room to drive the rifle stock down on the deck, so I would've had to keep short stroking it. The problem was fucking filthy, dusty magazines & ammo that had been rattling around in there for months.

So I popped back up on the 249, all while whichever haji kicked things off kept tagging KBR trucks with a goddamn mosin or something. But whatever lit up the front of our truck needed more attention, and a few seconds later the convoy finally made it past, and we took off.

The whole time I expected to catch a round in the back, instead of being able to at least suppress the original "sniper", before then having to burn up my 249 barrel to keep the haji with the RPK down until we could keep moving.

Good times.

When I got out of Advanced Jet they immediately sent me to Pendleton to do FAC/JTAC school, they had us (a handful of 1Lts) helping 1st Division during a training cycle as platoon leaders because they were down a few. The platoon sergeant I had been assigned with was a squared away guy, kinda short black dude with biceps the size of fucking basketballs, scout sniper certified with a few deployments to Somalia, Kuwait and the Balkans. He showed me the best thing officers and senior NCOs could do was take the M9s we were issued and just hand them over to the SAW and .50 gunners because any failures they deal with can better be handled by popping off a few rounds to keep heads down while they try to service/correct the weapon as quickly as possible. So the few FTXs I went on with that platoon the first thing I would do when we were moved off the board and on to dirt was hand my beretta over to the guy with the biggest gun.

Seems like that would have been helpful in that situation

I'll say that by 2010s m9s were the purview of lazy S shop types and few gun teams had them.

We absolutely would have been fobbits, doing depot level maintenance & services on HEMTTs & HETs; the same as in Germany.
But when we got to Anaconda, KBR already had a shop set up and was doing out job. That's how we ended up being tasked for running guntrucks and sitting on QRF.

But it was fucked up; KBR mechanics made fucking triple bank (at least), compared to a married E4, along with rotation out or R&R every 60-90 days. Meanwhile, our sister company sat up at Speicher. But for some reason they got the sweet armor kits & warlock, while we were welding armox & scrounging the can point.

We were a non-divisonal company, but still attached to 1ID, and didn't get anything good unless it was a hand-off. 240s didn't even trickle down until I was headed back to Carson. When I landed at that kaserne in Mannheim, it was like I'd stepped back into 1987.

Being that most of our shit was from the 80's and 90's, we were still wearing BDUs after the switch to ACUs. Because they hadn't come down through supply. So when the regs change happened, there was drama. Troops bought their own new ACUs, but nobody knew how to wear them correctly. Top made the call, and nobody wore the new shit until it got issued from supply. But then it didn't matter because we went downrange, and wore DCUs (I loved that uniform).

My own tool-truck deuce wasn't "new" from the 80's like the rest of our vehicles; it was built in like 1959 and still had the sweet screaming mimi turbo. I looked up the data plates in the system, and the last depot upgrade MWO was applied in like 1975.

And we didn't even have M16A3s; our A2s still had the carry handle, smooth handguards, no rails, no way to mount optics. My .50 was old as fuck too, but it worked better than anything else. I kept that Browning tip top; my armorer got sick of me constantly pestering him, but at least it kept our crew-served weapons working, especially the Mk19. It got to the point where he got sick of it, and I signed for the 50. So it was either with me in my hooch, on the truck, or in the motorpool vault when I was actually working, instead of being on the MSRs.

But on the other; can you imagine what an AUG (or any bullpup) bayonet charge would look like? Or executing a buttstroke to the face? It looks gay as fuck, and removes several advantages of having a regular stock.

To perform a buttstroke or a bayonet charge in a modern battlefield, you'd need A) run out of primary ammo b) run out of secondary ammo c) Your target has to have run out of primary and secondary as well, and there's no fire support in either side

In cases where a bayonet charge was successful in modern warfare (twice in the Falklands and I think one or two times in Iraq) The act of charging was enough to break the enemy and make them retreat. So even if your bullpup makes for a shit stick weapon, just the charge itself should do the job. (If the enemy doesn't have a machine gun that is, like Lt. Col Jones learned.)

At the chow hall during & after those fights, I overheard a lot about the fighting, and saw a lot of the footage the 1ID guys had made; thumb drives were passed around like 13yr olds with porn mags (wish I still had mine). So I made a point of hanging out as long as I could, listening & talking to whoever I could. When they were going crypt to crypt, literally running into a haji can & did happen.

Anyways, I remember recently a boomer was home invaded by a Floridaman, and the boomer took Floridaman's own shotgun and pulpified his face.

So the buttstroke is always viable; I just can't imagine a bullpup being able to hack it at home as an impact weapon

I'm terribly sorry you didn't get to strike a civilian in the face, but now I see with more clarity why the US did terribly in Middle Eastern Wars/Nation Building; sending knuckleheads that when presented with a platform that allows them to fit a longer barrel (thus allowing higher muzzle velocity) in a compact space (for easier vehicle carry) their primary feeling is dissapointment that they cannot hit people confortably over the head with it.

It's been much different since at least 2010 when I got in. The lowest you see on a gun truck is a M240. Now you can't even leave the confines of a deployed base with anything lighter than an MRAP or MATV. M2 has largely been replaced with the M2A1 which has a manual safety and fixed headspace you you don't need a headspace and timing tool. An interesting thing is a lot of M2A1s are rebuilds, so you still see old as fuck receivers.
