More like 3 years ago when a UK news channel ran a report saying the site of full of pedos trying to cyber with kids. It was quite a shitstorm, Sulake (the company that owns habbo) immediately muted the entire program so no one could could talk, for about 2 weeks while they went into full damage control mode. Meanwhile almost all businesses that carried their coin cards took them off the shelf, and their own investors ditched their stock and began to distance themselves from Sulake. By the time the site was unmuted, half of its 9 million users would never come back. Two months after the scandal they had to let go two-thirds of their workforce.
Sulake got lucky in two areas however, first they got taken over by a Finnish telecom company called Elisa that now owns 85% of the company, who invested a lot of resources into salvaging it. The second lucky break was that their fanbase is rabidly autistic and refused to give up on their pedophile haven. Because of that they were able to launch their game on iOS and Android, and well, I think everyone is aware of how shitty the taste is of mobile gamers. so of course it did really well there. They started selling clothes and monetizing anything else they could, and apparently they're doing quite well because of that.
