Jesus Christ, those tattoos are a fucking mess.

It's just fucking chaos all over his skin, no rhyme or reason at all. Not going to be long before his tattoos become full-blown horror vacui.

I mean, they actually make me feel physical revulsion. I'm sickened and angry just looking at them; the placement on his skin, how filthy they look, how crappy they look... everything about it is stirring up almost violent feelings. I'm so deeply uncomfortable.

This has never happened to me looking at a person's tattoos before and I have seen me some ugly tattoos.

What's going on with his skin in this picture? I have absolutely no experience with tattoos, but that looks like something messed up is happening.

By the looks of the purple hue of his elbow I would say that while the tattoo was being applied the blood vessel underneath the skin broke, thus cause a slight subcutaneous haemorrhage that we in the layman's world would refer to as a "bruise".

also it looks pretty infect.

Tattoo needles aren't supposed to go in deep enough to cause a bruise though. They're supposed to go to between the epidermus and the hypodermis but not deeper since it can cause fading and patchy results, as well as increased risk of infection and scarring. Too shallow and it will fade unevenly or end up with blank spots where the epidermus eventually sheds skin cells.

Phil's tattooist knows about as much about tattooing as Phil does about bikes I guess.

I can't tell if the orange bicep is from tattoo ink or a sunburn. Or neither, which has horrifying implications all 'round.

I think it's actually probably just the ink from where the tattooist marked the skin before starting.

They always use purple ink, I have no idea why.
Then, during the process of tattooing the area is repeatedly wiped clean of blood and excess ink, which spreads the purple ink around the area.
It's pretty stalwart ink, so it often takes a while to shift it off your skin afterwards.
