Happy V-E Day! -

75 years ago, on this date, Nazi Germany surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, ending nearly six years of war in Europe.

Let us never forget all the innocent men, women, and children who suffered and died due to the Nazis.

And let us always remember all the men and women, of many countries, who gave up all their tomorrows so we could have our today.

Sadly, there's almost no mention of VE-Day in the mainstream media today.

But, as has been said, those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it. I REALLY don't want a World War III.

It's only been 74 years.

Also, we prefer to celebrate April 30th when Hilter became an hero.

For the sheer amount of horrid war crimes and street to street brawls for a month in Berlin where the commies were stealing to feed themselves due to supply chains being over strained it was one hell a fight.

I've read claims if you do the crunch the battle of Berlin cost 10k men PER BLOCK. I walk a few blocks to work and pictured an entire sports stadium killed just for that brief stroll, my stomach churned really hard.

Like the Memorial Day, this should be "observed" not "celebrated". Tens of millions dead, millions invalids post war. How many of them were "cleaned up" later?

For fucks sake, let's not forget about hundreds of thousands of dead soldiers who still lie, to this fucking day, in the swamps of Belorus and Western Russia. You want to celebrate? How about trying to bury your dead?

Let's not forget that Soviet Union started the god damned war on the side of Nazi's in 1939, by invading Poland, then by invading Finland ...

Let's not forget that materials from Soviet stavka 6 mo prior to June invasion are still classified and Putin extended secrecy. Nothing to hide comrades.

Let's not forget that Stalin sent congratulatory telegrams to Hitler about his success in conquering France.

Here you go, Nazis and Commies celebrate parade in Brest after they bombed the shit out of Polacks, together, side by side.

I remember allright, I just remember a different history.

The first parade for the "victory day" took place in 1965 ... because since 1945 no one in their right mind could bring themselves to "celebrate" anything.

From what my mother told me, after the war there were invalids everywhere. Most of them homeless, living on the street, begging, disfigured, then suddenly they all disappeared. There was an initiative to "clean up" all that bio-waste post war. There were places where a lot of them were bussed to and dumped, because the rest of the country was not much better shape, but they were forgotten.

One painter made some portraits of people in one such place, in 1974 when the bulk of the vets was already dead.

Do you want to "celebrate" this. Do you see these veterans walking on the Red Square?

I remember that history, too.

Not defending everything the USSR/Stalin did. Matter of fact, I don't defend Stalin's allowing millions of Soviet soldiers to be captured, and treated horribly. And I REALLY don't defend his practice of sending many liberated Soviet prisoners of war to the GULAG, such as Major Gavrilov of the Brest garrison.

But I do recognize and appreciate the service and sacrifice of those Soviet soldiers, who fought, and fought, and fought, who stopped the Nazis at Stalingrad, who achieved the victory at Kursk, who shed oceans of blood taking Berlin. Please note in the OP that I praise the men and women who fought and died, not any government. I separate the government from the people.

And as you have mentioned, too soon have the injured Soviet veterans been forgotten. I sure don't defend that, either.

It was a model landing, achieving immediate success at minimal cost

Thanks! My grandfather was in the 4thID, fought in France during World War I.

Most of my family tree got pruned the fuck out after two world wars and a civil war. I have enough stories to fill ten such forums.

1. Most soldiers who actually fought through the meat grinders didn't want to be there. Entire dumbass generation that volunteered after June invasion was wiped out in '41. Most people wanted this madness to stop, both Soviet and Germans. My and wife's family was under occupation, we know. 99% combat vets, given a chance would go home. Once the meatgrinder is at peak RPMs, the only way to stop it is with more unwilling bodies. Those who deny it lie.

2. My grandfather had a bunch of combat medals, he was a grunt who died right after the war. When I asked my mother where are the medals, she said something like who gives a fuck about medals? Post-war it was total hunger. No one cared for some colorful pins. She is right. I'd rather have my uncles and the rest of the family, and their kids and grandkids. I give no shit about bullshit honor and medals. In my humble experience, the only veterans who parade in uniform and showcase their medals are attention whores who served in cushy spots away from front lines. Americans have been in some tight spots, but Eastern front was D-day every day and thrice on Sunday.

3. Stalin sent millions to fucking slaughter, meat grinders. He gave no shit, no one did. Like Zhukov famously said "advance, don't count dead" and "women will birth more"

4. Soviet veterans were never remembered or cared for. In a typical Soviet fashion, they are expandable bio-resource. That attitude did not change in Chechnya nor East Ukraine, did not change yet today. Go serve Russian Federation and inconveniently, you'll be forgotten and cast out once you are all used up.

5. The whole "celebration" is a horrible farce, a joke from the category of the darkest humor. All these millions spent on parades of photogenic, eager cadets, the idiot mother dressing their babies into soldier uniforms ... they are fucking mental cases who know nothing about war which is madness, injustice, suffering and death, lots of it.

I didn't just picked some random pictures, I actually talked to people who were in situations like that. Comrade, it is not celebration.

A VE factoid. When Hitler committed suicide, the bunker was abandoned by the Germans. However, the Waffen SS Charlemagne division, at this point barely a squad, continued to defend the bunker to prevent the Soviets from capturing the bunker on or before May Day.

The Waffen SS division was made up of French volunteers. There were attempts to make other volunteer groups, including a British one made up of POWs, however, that was a complete failure.

Much like the east European allies who post war were sent off to Stalin to be slaughtered in mass, most of these volunteers would die in custody, even in the west. The French Free Forces were notorious for killing SS volunteers from their country.
