Harry Shearer, the voice of iconic "Simpsons" characters like Mr. Burns, is walking away from a $14 million offer and is saying farewell to the show.
"As the Simpsons continues its 27th and 28th seasons, Harry Shearer will not be within the show," showrunner Al Jean said in an email message to CNNMoney.


Besides the evil Mr. Burns, Shearer also voices Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, the Rev. Lovejoy and Kent Brockman.

"We do not plan to 'kill off' his characters," Jean added, "but replace them with the most talented members of the voice over community."

Hopefully this will hasten the end of this show, I think we can all agree it has become rancid by now.

I have Seasons 3-8 on my hard drive and it still finds its way into my regular rotation. It was legitimately brilliant.

Then...God. It's like having a friend who's super fucking funny, the funniest dude you know, but then he gets into a car crash and hits his head and just becomes completely awful and annoying, then goes into a coma, and nobody seems to want to pull the plug because everyone just wants to remember how he used to be...but he's not that anymore. Went fairly rapidly from being easily one of the best shows on TV to easily one of the worst. You'd think that they'd decide enough is enough and pack it in when the actors are leaving and literally dying but I guess it still somehow makes money.

I'm pretty sure they already said they're recasting. Simpsons will never die. Eventually they'll make them all vocalioids made of samples of the past decades, then they'll create algorithmically generated episodes forever.

If you're talking about the current series, I do think it will be cancelled eventually. With that being said, I believe that the characters themselves will long outlive the series. Charlie's Angels had a movie coming out 19 years after the original series was cancelled, that movie was followed by a sequel and the series also had a remake in 2011. The Simpsons are definitely more iconic, I'm sure that after the current series will be over there will still be Simpsons movies, games, comics and eventually a new series as well. Although remakes are usually looked down upon, I don't think the inevitable Simpsons ramake will necessarily be rotten; remember that Nolan's Batman series came after Schumacher's films.

The Simpsons needs to die. I know much like many other super successful franchises it's not gonna truly come to an end, but the show at the very least needs to be cancelled in its current incarnation. They should give the damn thing a reboot at the very least.

Shearer wanted to leave even back in 2004. I'm not surprised that he decided to do this. He's been feeling this way about the show for a long time. He does still have his own podcast though even into his 70s.

Simpsons needs to be put down like a dog. Family Guy same deal. Make room for fresher, new programming on the FOX Sunday primetime lineup.
