You know what would make pluralists a smidgen less insufferable? If any one of their imaginary companions were ugly. No Matt Smiths or Tom Hiddlestons or any other actors people desperate for nerd cred invoke. We need some Harry Plinketts and garden slugs rocking their skulls.

The fact that a lot of these people's "headmates" are claimed to be famous actors or established fictional characters from cartoons, anime, video games, etc, and otherkin, to me, really speaks to how disingenuous the whole concept is. No one wants to be headmates with a homeless beggar from 19th century Russia or a baker living in New Zealand, because those people are BORING!

I checked over the list. Most of the headmates are from animes I never heard of, Kingdom Hearts, some marvel characters (I bet Captain America would be absolutly thrilled to be stuck in the brains of some hipster) and homestuck, frickin homestuck

I am however very surprised that there are only two listings for MLP characters. Like, whats going on here?

Statistically shouldn't the most common headmate be a Chinese man in his early 20s, lol.

Because hardly any men get deluded in this particular way, and (at this kind of age) only men really get into MLP.
You have to remember that a lot of these people are female and probably avoid MLP due to its affilation with bronies.

I did want to add that I don't believe the majority of these people have any kind of mental illness related to dissociation of any kind. My bf's ex-girlfriend got into this shit as a way of explaining her crazy ass stalking behaviour after we got together. She does show signs of mental health issues but they would be narcissistic personality disorder and histrionic personality disorder. The 'headmates' shit was just a way to avoid accepting responsibility for her actions. It made my bf even angrier as he has experienced how my mental health issues effect me and how I get treated for having them.

EDOT: And a fuck ton of special snowflakes.

I should make an amendment to what I said before. I don't hate those people. I just really have a problem with the fact that they feed off other peoples mental illnesses. I have a problem with the fact that the community has condoned pedophilia in the past by basically saying "its okay for us to have sex with children and young teens because we're really in love with the people who live in their heads. Not them." I understand that not all of them feel that way. But believe me, a good number of them do.

I can't remember where I read it now (probably tumblr), but I once saw a man who had schizophrenia decide the voices he heard were headmates/soul bonds. The rest of the headmate/soul bond community encouraged him to believe this and he stopped taking his medication. It just made me so angry, the poor man was clearly really ill (his posts were complete word salad) and instead of telling him to get help, he was encouraged to stop his treatment and believe his delusions, just because some people want to feel like special snowflakes.

the worst part of that is that it's likely that these people completely fucking ruined this guy's life. it's very possible that he did things that fucked up his chances at having a normal existence and it's also incredibly possible that it made it harder for those who might have known him in real life to convince him to get back on his meds.

I don't know much about a lot of the characters on the fictives list, but all the homestuck characters they chose seem to have been hand-picked to maximize their snowflakitude. For chrissakes, two of the characters they chose hear voices in their heads already. so the voices in their head have voices in THEIR heads.

I saw this thread and didn't want to read it because I knew it would really be messed up, and it's about what I thought.

I hope these people get the help they need. Like PVTRichardCranium said, it sucks to have a mental illness and not be able to control your thoughts and emotions. I don't see anything good coming from this fad or trend or whatever you want to call it.

I only found out about "headmates" etc about a year ago and I could not get my fucking head around it and still can't to this day.
How could anyone believe this?

I began to follow one on Tumblr to laugh at her posts and she also claimed to be otherkin. So she identified as her headmates trapped inside an animal trapped inside a human body. But this "animal" has literally just been whatever animal is popular on Tumblr that day. One day she's a snow leopard, the next a bird, the next a whale. For each "animal" she is (she doesn't "shift shape" either, she literally just changes what she is so can pander to new followers) One week she was a whale and started posting about "whale feels" and how she was in class doing a test and dropped her pencil but couldn't pick it up because she couldn't feel her fingers because WHALE FEELZ and her headmates were "consoling" her over her trauma. I sent her a diagram showing that actually, whales DO have fingers within their fins and if she were ACTUALLY a whale on the inside she wouldn't of had that problem. She basically publicly admitted that she never had any whale feelz and that her headmates told her to do it. I do not fucking understand a word these people say. Same for otherkin.

See I really don't agree. I think only a small percentage of these people GENUINELY believe there are characters alive in their heads. A very small percentage. The rest of them are attention whore snowflakes who put on a show for attention.

I hope you're right. I hope they're just being immature or this is a misguided attempt to get attention. If they're immature I hope they grow out of it and see how dumb it all was. If they're faking a mental illness for attention then they ought to be ashamed of themselves, or they just have a weird idea of what fun is.

Or most of them are trolls wanting to mess with people.

If thy're really deluded then they need help stat.

im actually a pretty big fan of it, but our opinions on it aren't really the point. don't know what was up with that tangent. seemed a little over the top.

Yeah, I really do get the feeling that this whole thing amounts to the typical lolcow formula where the person sort of wants attention and will do whatever it takes to get it. It's neurotic to a kind of absurd degree and i'm kind of surprised that there's a movement this big devoted to them.

What I wonder is if, in their search for snowflakitude, they start buying into their delusions. At what point does the lie become their reality, you know?

I'm also sort of insanely surprised at how many people here have experiences with these folk and their ilk, I thought this was a rather small movement at best but it looks like its a lot bigger than i estimated.

I think we have a disproportionately high number of forum members who have been in or are the mental health system. That makes it way more likely that they will have encountered this stuff.

I'm pretty confident I'm right about it. Like there's that infamous post online about the otherkin who "couldn't help it" and "became" a wolf at work and got fired for it. When people like this are doing stuff like that that means that they obviously actually believe that this is going on inside of them to their core. I recently read online about a "system" or whatever who had an abusive parent, their parent begins shouting at them, they got scared, one of their "other" characters or headmates came to the front to take over the situation and ended up cutting his/herself against her own will. Then they got taken to mental hospital for telling doctors that it was the headmate, then lied out of mental hospital by claiming they were joking. Someone who is clearly out of control of the situation and is doing shit like this clearly actually believes this shit is going on inside them. But think about it, all these multiple people are going around online like 'omg XXX in my head is so violent n edgy omggg' yet they have never actually DONE anything violent (not saying they should) when that edgyyy character is to the front? Because they know its bullshit and they arent really sharing a brain with X amount of other people. Just special snowflake syndrome. If you absolutely TRULY had another person take control of your body you wouldn't be able to stop them from doing any violence or life ruining shit they wanted to do.

Ok I am going to rant a bit because this Headmate shit hits very close to home for me. I am very close to someone that has Schizoaffective disorder. That means that he has mood swings and some auditory hallucinations like is name being called or really loud bangs. Sometimes if it gets bad is says it's like having a radio in you head that keep switching stations. For the record he dose not think that he has a bunch of fictional characters living in his head.

Any way, when we was first diagnosed it was very hard for him to get his family to fully understand that he may be a little crazy but not that crazy. It took them a few years to accept that he was functional and still the same person as before because the had confused it with Schizophrenia (it is some what different.) and thought that it was like what is shown in moves, and books. One of his family had found a website on headmates and asked him if he was faking it and only thought that he had people in his head. It took him all day to convince them that his condition was real and he was getting the right treatment for it, and that that website was a bunch of bullshit made by idiots that want to feel special.

He did contact one of the websites (I don't remember who this was over 5 years ago) and told them that they should maybe put up a disclaimer that this was a kind of role play or something because it can confuse people that have mental illnesses and their families with false information. He was told that he was insesitive to other that had to live with this "condition" and that he should be more opened minded.
