She got a Masters degree, which "costs about a hundred thousand dollars despite scholarships."
Then, she got a law degree, "about two hundred thousand.. from Columbia".
Malaika has either been incapable, or unwilling, to get the biglaw jobs that people actually qualified to go to Columbia Law do. She has been splitting her time between public service law jobs, and being a 'reporter'.
As a result, she can't/won't pay her loans off fast enough, and thus accrues $2,500 more debt each year at the present rate. With this compounding, she reckons she will end up with a total of a million dollars in debt by 'retirement'.
She seems like a nice young lady, but the problem isn't that noone wanted to give her $300,000 of free money to get two postgraduate degrees she isn't even using. The problem is that she shouldn't have gone to college in the first place- she should be the happy wife of a successful black plumbing contractor.
Literally everyone interviewed is absolute garbage. Noone needs an uptalking midwit to get a $100,000 masters degree in 'public health' or 'public policy'. There is a proven model for allowing people without rich parents to contribute to the public good. First, you work at a government agency and prove your worth working at the coal face. Then, as part of some sort of cadet program where the 'folks' who participate are selected on merit, you commit to working for the government while, and after, earning a degree fully funded by the agency. But none of these people would ever get in the door of the cadet program, they're all absolutely worthless and extremely punchable.
It's well worth the hate listen.
