HOI4 is hilariously my favorite of the lot barring Paradox's craving of shekels for it. I consider it the easiest to get a game going out of the lot and barring some crippling brain damage, the more hands-off style of unit management is fine given you can still take direct control whenever the AI thinks reshuffling your front makes sense. I will be a stupid mark and buy the China DLC because Nat China is and remains my favorite nation to play as. Com. China being my favorite little minor with potential.

3 felt like a bloated mess and the way war was managed was... weak to say the least. Also may have trolled my way into victory more than once due to the game's AI being worse than 4's IMO.

HOI2 is still a favorite of mine in the series, only beaten out by 4 due to polish and aging.

I own HOI original; I could not get into it since it felt lacking compared to HOI2 naturally.

Can't agree with most of that, and I own Darkest Hour through HoI4. I guess some disagreement is fundamental to what we want in a game though given that you call HoI3 bloated and I specifically add a mod to make it even more gloriously bloated.

Hilariously BlackICE is bloated, but in a good way given it changes the way the game plays significantly and I like the added unit variety.

Vanilla 3 felt more like they just did HOI2 and broke the provinces up into tinier chunks (the part I felt was bloated the most), gutted the elements I liked (I still miss tech teams), and made the AI less effective due to the ground game widening; I should not be able to shit all over Italy as Albania, but I did... not out of skill, but due to the AI not using its assets well. I also thought it handled logistics like shit.

It's kind of like how EU4 was shit at first given it was just a very slightly upscaled EU3 on initial release.

I don't think vanilla is as bad as everybody complains about so long as you restrict yourself to nations in the Eurasian landmass. The AI isn't too bad at handling ground and air forces in the limited confines of continental Eurasia. My major complaint is in regards to the late game performance slowdown once there's stacks and stacks of units bogging down the engine and turning every theatre into a sluggish attrition meatgrinder from hell. Makes it hard to keep me engaged after 1944 or so, compared to the fluid wars of maneuver and encirclement you have in the earlier years, being forced to improvise on the go with a handful of units.

I've been playing a bit of Kaiserreich.

For a kicker, the last country starts as a japanese puppet based in Vladivostok claiming to be the true government of Russia.

Darkest Hour is probably the pinnacle of HOI games.

Remember; my favorite games are typically not in Europe. I tend to play Nat. China, its enemy Japan, or the Bear. So this predilection of mine may make 3 look worse than it is since the engine that handles logistics and the AI just isn't as up to snuff on wide fronts. Let's just say I hate how the baggage train would take shit paths to the front and stall me out. You are right about the chug killing it too, but that's an issue since at least 2; 2 just now being so much less resource intensive it's less noticeable now... that and it likes crashing.

I like doing alternate history style playthroughs with Hearts of Iron. Not even just playing Kaiserreich (which is really good and I really recommend it heartily), but even in Vanilla. I think since Death or Dishonor came out, I try my best to remake the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungarian Empire. I just wish I had the option of changing the capital over to Vienna and getting all the Austrian manufacturers instead. Because, let's be honest, OWG Steyr beats FEG Budapest ten times out of ten.
