I'm going to buy a dog next month and have narrowed it down to a few candidates. I live in a city in a huge 2BR apartment by myself with a small backyard that's all concrete. I would ideally like a German Shepherd because I had one growing up, but I need to be realistic about where I live. The dog would be an indoor dog because of air pollution/lack of a backyard and not require a lot of exercise because I work quite a bit.

Dachshund - Pro: They look like wieners which is hilarious, bred to kill badgers which is pretty sick. Con: I heard they can be mean and bite a lot. Must mistake people for badgers.

Corgi - Pro: Super cute, capable of being able to post on internet forums. Con: My Mom has a dog that is part Corgi and she is dumber than a box of rocks.

Shiba Inu - Pro: wow Cons: I've heard they're very temperamental and destructive.

Cocker Spaniel - Pro: Hella cute. Con: Require constant grooming and shed quite a bit. Also quite expensive.

Samoyed: Pro: Also hella cute. Con: Sheds a hell lot. Easily bored and destroy stuff.

Miniature Schauzer: Pro: My friend had a bunch of these growing up and out of the three only one was an asshole. Con: They bark a lot.

Scottish Terrier: Pro: I had some book as a kid about them. Con: I heard they can be mean?

Pomeranian: Pro: My friend had one that had a smoker's hack and yet it lived to be like 14 years old. Con: Barks a lot.

Post your experiences with these dog breeds if you've ever owned one.

I really recommend watching Animal Planet's Dogs 101 on each of the breeds you're considering.
They should all be on YouTube, and they're always really informative about certain breed traits and medical issues.

I'll get you started with the one on corgs:

Daschhunds are amazing.

My grandparents owned them for twenty-five years, hilarious little creatures. A lion's heart in a tiny short-legged body. We have a nature reserve around were we live, and there's a herd of wild boars. If by accident a daschund encounters one of them, he does not back down. He charges! But at the same time, I remember them being terrified of rain and being quite vain. The rough haired ones are the cutest IMO, and they can be hilariously stubborn and strong willed.

The last daschhund they had was a little fellow named Jip, who would get terribly jealous whenever my grandma was on the phone. He'd throw a bone under a cabinet in a hard-to-reach place, then look up at you with this "why aren't you helping me solve this terrible problem" face. He was also able to open the lock on his cage from the inside using his nose. Terribly clever little thing. As my grandparents always say, a daschhund isn't really a dog, it's a different creature altogether. Now they have some mutt but they still call it a daschund because it has short legs and a big ego.

I get stuck dog sitting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel all the time, she is lovely but needs a lot of cuddles and likes to sit on my lap (she isn't a tiny dog)

Dachshund, adopted greyhound, pointer or spaniel.

All the Scottish terriers i've known have enjoyed rats, mud and foul smelling things, whilst getting extremely upset about baths.

Unless you already know and love the Spitz temperament, please get to know it and make sure you love it before taking a chance with one of these dogs. I'd suggest holding off on adopting a Shiba Inu, Samoyed, Corgi or Vallhund, as they will become nightmares if you let them get bored.

Shibes turn evil when they're bored, like they'll actually fuck with you just to be dicks. They'll figure out what you love most in order to destroy it. Also, Corgis and vallhunds are working dogs despite their stubby cuteness - if you're not proactive about giving them "jobs," they can go kind of insane and become depressed and mean. German spitz might be a better choice than a Samoyed for an apartment, if you decide Spitz are your thing.

May I also suggest a Glen of Imaal terrier? They are delightful.

Mah nigga.

If you're buying from a breeder, make sure it's a reputable one which screens it's pups for genetic and physiological defects. It's also a better idea to get a pup if you want to train it. Getting one from a shelter is also good, but you could be hard pressed to find one ideal for your situation.

At different points in my life I've owned or had to look after a cocker spaniel, a dachshund, a corgi, a scottish terrier and a miniature schnauzer among other breeds.

Out of all of them, I can safely say that the miniature schnauzer (His name was Bruno) was the best one by far. He was trainable, very sweet and loyal. Also, he had a tiny beard. How can you not like a dog that has a beard?

Get a corg, they are the forum's official dog.

though, if you are looking for an indoor dog, your best bet would be a small dog. You can always look for a small dog at the shelter mixes are usually appealing due to that hybrid vigor and if it is from the shelter, it means you are giving an underprivileged dog a good home.

Cocker spaniels are amazing. My Sully is smart, loving, an very protective of me. I keep his grooming at an easy level by keeping his hair shaved at a puppy cut.
