What the fuck, ill bite. If you guys feel like you want a thread on all my musings regarding Indo-Europeans vs posting this novel, give me a heads up. Otherwise I am just here to share my cultural roots.

I am not entirely well versed in the Vedic (Old Indian) Gods, nor the society as a whole, but I have studied their origins in the Indo-Europeans who migrated from the Caucuses both North and South.

Some went south to Northern India, and we can see the language and cultural identity that has a continued hold on the people living there today. The northerners, who are my subspecialty, moved across the steppe and into the Baltic basin, ~40,000 years ago, we think.

While I lack the philosophical musings you have acquired, the shared roots of societies as distant as the Balts and the ancient Vedic culture are striking! In fact, the Baltic language family and pagan religious philosophy and values has more commonalities with Sanskrit in Northern India, than with the Slavs, Nordics, Germanic, Finno-Ugric languages which surround the Baltic area.

Why is this, you may ask? Simply put, it is because these two societies come from the same roots. But if we peer deeper into it, one may pose the question of why all these other local groups, who also spread from the Caucauses, do not retain these similarities? Or if they do, it is further down the branch in the ever-growing linguistic tree.

The best place to start is with this graphic , showcasing the evolution and branches of different clusters of languages. As we can see, around the same time as Sanskrit was established, so too were the Baltic languages. Reasons for the similarities are a shared root language, but the more interesting part I think is that while so many other languages faded or evolved, the Baltic language is an anomaly due to the isolation the region maintained from the rest if Europe.


In other words, while the rest of Europe was being carved and polished into a civil society by both the native Europeans and those who conquered them, the Baltic area was untouched.

This is largely due to the geographical difficulties that presented themselves when trying to step foot into the region. The Baltic basin keeps a high water level on these flatlands, and in return this presents a perfect chemical mixture for plants to grow. One year they would clear a road or path for trading, and the next year it would be impossible to tell where the path used to be. Everything was a natural defense, and the reward for traveling through the thick forests and swamps was very unimpressive.

The Baltic area is like a time capsule. These last pagans of Europe represented what the Celts and other natives wiped out and assimilated by the Roman empire may have been. Their pagan ways remained so steadfast as the rest of Europe was Christianized.

In being this time capsule, we have so much less diversity and change within the cultures of the Baltic region. This can explain why the language is so similar to Sanskrit, as it did not undergo changes and evolutions brought on by foreigners.

so this argument can also be applied not only to the linguistic similarities of names for the Gods, but also the very forms they manifested themselves in, and philosophy that these religions are based on.



We have a common name today in Peter, which is related heavily to the indo european word for father, Peter.

In this graphic we can take the Hindu and Vedic roots and stretch then all across Europe.

In the Roman Pantheon we have Deus Pater, later turning into Jupiter.... with Ju meaning "Sky" and "piter" being the indo european root for Father. So we get Sky Father --> connect that to the Hindu God, Dyaus Pita, "dyaus" = Heaven, "Pita" = father. Heavenly Father.

we can take that two directions now, sort of creating a map of how these Indo-Europeans migrated based on the evolution of linguistics.

Dyaus/Deus Pita --> can be stretched into Dievs, Dievas, which is both the Baltic language and Sanskrit "umbrella god" who sees over all, even the word for god.

Dievs/Dievas --> the connection to foundational gods Devi and Deva can be made here, within Hindu

Zeus Pita, all seeing father --> Ziu in Norse mythology, meaning "seeing all", as well as the concept of the Norse "alofadr"/all father.

.... so this is just one example of these linguistic tendencies being carried across the world. There are a few underlying themes which prevail in many Indo European myths. Even today.

The first being the image of the Gods in human form, sometimes visiting. Many fables preaching hospitality prevail, saying that you never know if the stranger who needs shelter is a God in disguise.

The second here is the attachment of these gods into natural elements as a way for explaining various phenomena. For example, we have the Sky Father, ruler of the heavens. Sometimes equated with the sun, but other times the sun is the "son" of the heavens and the earth. Common trend is also the presence of this "earth mother", who is joined by the heavens, creating everything from cows, to men, to lesser gods.



We have the presence of twins in MANY founding myths, the offspring of heaven and earth. These can be the Moon and the Sun, which is very common. In Greek mythology we have Castor and Pollux, the offspring of the sky father. In Greek we see phonetic similarities in the word Diós-kouroi (Dioskoroi) used to describe them. Very similar to the other words i earlier introduced. In gaulic we have Divanno. So you can kind of see where the word "divine" which is synonymous with Gods, stems from.

Very often these special twins will be called less by their individual names and more by the collective word native to the region for "sons of the sky".



Additionally we have these words for the Moon God, also indicating the term of a month, and therefore we get the word "menses" from this, indicating the frequency of ovulation for females.

But we can also find it in more literal forms, such as Romulus and Remus, as well as the old prussian leadrs Widewuto (Wīdewutis) and Brudeno (Prutenis).

Additionally we can find much more obvious similarities in the special names for this set of twins birthed from the sky and earth. In Vedic they are called Asvin, in Lithuanian lore, Asvieniai.

A more well known God is Thor, who has an equivalent in several pagan beliefs, indicating it is extremely wide spread. Sometimes we find Odin and Thor's identity become merged, with a single entity carrying both of the trademarks of these Norse Gods. These are just the most well known, so it is easiest to branch off here.



I would be lying if I said I didn't love to share this story. So apologies if this turns into me rambling about lingual and religious commonalities. These people are my ancestors, and unlike the modern intellectual, i firmly believe that sharing my culture with others is the only way to ensure it is not forgotten. Though if you did decide to stick around to the end, it is my hope you have gained at least a little trivia you can surprise people with.

I have not reached my destination in my life's journey enough to make surefire assumptions as you have here. But I feel that knowledge is power, and these anomalies are extremely useful in understanding the generational journeys our species has made. We can uncode the future by understanding the past.
