Chemical weapons were NOT the WMD advertised to the American public. Bush clearly meant Nuclear armaments which is why there was such a furor over Hans Blix and the IAEA declaring the WMD intelligence to be fake news. Bush had the CIA fabricate evidence for his war and the global public wasn't buying any of it, not to mention the entire world knew Saddam had chemical weapons because the USA gave them to Saddam during the Iraq-Iran war. It was embarrassing for us to find the stores of chemical munitions we provided laying around in destroyed warehouses we blew up during Desert Storm so it was all kept hush hush and quite likely that some of the functional weapons crossed the border to Syria.
