I am surprised nobody mentioned medievalpoc yet, the queen of tumblr revisionist history.

I remember reading comments about the controversy Witcher 3 gotten for not having POC. One guy linked that tumlr only to be met with a response that summed it up as it being a sort of "American cultural imperialism". By that, I mean some guy is posted a link to the tumblr and someone refuted the link by saying it was nothing more than a sort of imperialism since it means that those of their own culture are ignorant compared to a foreigner who claims what skin color the person really is. I know history isn't the most accurate but one does have to understand that language had a different meaning for something back then (by that, saying black wouldn't refer to skin but rather to hair). This sort of thing also happened to a group that was making Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Some guy on twitter got into a fight with the dev, saying it wasn't accurate because there were no dark skinned people in the game. While you could of had an African in Europe, wouldn't that of depended on the region? I'm sure some merchant in Venice would have one but a king from the boondocks in Bavaria? I highly doubt it unless the area was of global importance in some case.

An earlier post mentioned they ignored African history. SJW's can insist Beethoven was black but would they bring up Mansa Munsa? And considering they are focusing on Europe, wouldn't this in a way be Eurocentric since this means ignoring the likes of Mansa Munsa or that Ethiopia itself was once known as the Abyssinian Empire?

As far as how some would say Africans were the founders of some Indian empire, the only ground the African thing would hold (and this would no doubt be a wild guess) is that for those that know of evolution in how humans came about, the pre-human ancestor was from Africa and its offspring migrated through the world. While in a way we are all African through that one pre-human ancestor, an SJW using that would still fall since as mentioned, it had offspring that migrated out of Africa.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of racists out there who like to point to how x race didn't build enough great civilizations or invent enough things as proof they're inferior. I guess people on Tumblr are too ignorant to have any real facts to point to to try to counter this, but they are still extremely angry and want to respond so they are forced to make some up. What they fail to realize it that bigots are gonna be bigots and the majority of them will just shift the goalposts no matter what the evidence is. Like, with STEM, some people used to just straight up think women were too retarded to into science. Now that it's fairly obvious that's not the case, sexists will just say MOST women are too retarded or that female scientists don't make enough discoveries or aren't in the right fields. It's the same thing here. Racists will always downplay black civilizations and black inventors. Let's say tomorrow they find Atlantis and it turns out it was 100% African people and everything they did was way more advanced than everything else happening at the time. Do you think racists are going to be like "gee I guess all races really are equal after all, I was wrong" no they are going to bitch about how they probably stole all the technology or if they were so smart why did they all die out. As far as issues go with things, when you do consider the context of their times, they are more progressive than their contemporaries such as with Christianity in that it mean't treating women with more respect (even though one verse tells them to obey their husbands, the husbands are also suppose to listen to their wives. Just leave it at that since I don't want to derail and/or turn this into a possible flamewar over religion).

I know we should be careful in perceiving historical figures since the perception of them can be different such as Ghengis Kahn (admired by some, hated by others) but one should at least understand the things they done to deserve admiration or hate before right off the bat spitting upon them just because of skin color or ethnicity.

I could sperg on the topic of race in ancient Egypt for quite a while, but since it's a touchy subject, I'll keep this brief.

(Although for the record I think it's quite likely that ancient Egyptians would have looked 'black' to a modern eye. They certainly wouldn't have looked as 'white' as they are often depicted today. But I don't think it really tells us anything about ancient Egyptian society or culture, because they wouldn't have had any consciousness of themselves as 'black').

For the most I agree, though exactly what constitutes "black" isn't necessarily clear cut given the socially constructed nature of race. To most people here in the States, Northeast Africans like North Sudanese, Somalis, or most Ethiopians would qualify as "Black African" on account of their darker skin and being native to Africa, but on certain racialist forums they're considered a separate "race" from the broader-featured West African ancestors of most Afro-Diasporans. And then there's the fact that Northeast Africans do share some common ancestry with Out-of-Africa migrants, so they would be expected to have more genetic overlap with Eurasians than other Africans would.

For what it's worth, the Egyptians appear to have painted themselves less dark than Kushites further up the Nile, but also significantly darker than (presumably Berber) Libyans from Mediterranean North Africa and Semitics (e.g. Hebrews and Arabs) from the Middle East. The former distinction doesn't have to make them necessarily "non-black" though, anymore than southernmost African Khoisan are "less black" than equatorial Congolese due to having lighter skin; Africans can vary in skin tone just like "Caucasoids".

That said, the opinion that modern Egyptians are all "Arabs" whose ancestors wiped out or drove off the natives is most probably offensive bunk. I would say the situation was more similar to Latin America, where you had the invaders assimilating into the native gene pool (but with more time and no smallpox of course).

Ah historical revisionists... To be honest, when I first saw this topic, I thought it was going to be about Holocaust denial, but really it's all the same thing. Well, most of these people aren't exactly well educated, nor do they take the time to do research on the pictures or quotes they use. Ironically, all 'black' people look the same, whether its an Olmec head, Egyptian artwork or Mycenaean pottery.

I think part of its because most of these SJWs come from the US, where until relatively recently, 'minority' was almost entirely synonymous with 'black.' I've worked in education and had people who seemed incredulous that Native Americans still existed, and groups like Polynesians, Hmong, Kurds, Sami, Roma, Ainu, Australian Aborigines and others are even further from public consciousness. If they are thought of at all, its as 'foreign' cultures that live on the other side of the world (unless we get into anti-immigrant hysteria and Islamophobia).

Also, I admit my knowledge of African history is woefully lacking, but I do seem to recall reading a bit about a couple of great African Empires built and ruled by black cultures. Wasn't the Mali Empire kind of a big deal? If these tumblristas really cared about African history and educating people about it, there's loads of great ancient African societies they could be sperging about.

I believe there are multiple factors there, really. Aside from the obvious fact that they really don't care to learn about African and Diasporic history. There is (or historically has been) something of a bias against black Africa in Western discourse. Until very recently, most black Americans wanted to distance themselves from the word 'Africa.' Africa was 'primitive,' 'pagan,' 'barbaric.' Ironically even black nationalists continued this trend. Nation of Islam and similar groups talked about the 'blackman of Asia' and 'Asiatics,' rather than looking to Africa. They tried to claim everything... the 'Black Athena,' Egypt, India.... but not Angola or Kenya. Places like Greece, India and Egypt are seen as 'romantic' in the Western mind, but sub-Saharan Africa not so much so...

The tumblarinas have inherited these same prejudices. For all their whining about 'white people' they still tend to compare America to liberal European nations (never mind that Europe suffers from racism too) and seem genuinely ignorant about modern African nations. They never really talk about the Rwandan Genocide, the Congo Civil Wars, the Touareg secessionists in Mali, Boko Haram, Cabinda, race relations in Zimbabwe and South Africa, ethnic conflicts in South Sudan, etc. Hell most talk about 'Africa' as if it were a single bloody country.

EDIT: And, of course, none of that will get around the fact that, due to great interest and success in sea travel, and, later, industrialization, European imperial ambitions managed to subjugate most of Africa. It's unfortunate, but it's also true.

Well that's true, but its also only looking at very recent history. Europe has only come to dominate the rest of the globe over the last two centuries or so (and the US less than that). India, China and the Islamic Empires were much stronger at one point and as it stands are catching up. Ironically one of the big things that hurt African empires was the end of the slave trade. Europeans had very little presence in Africa at the height of the Atlantic slave trade.

If you wanted to "revise" history more accurately to reflect the prominence of a lot of now virtually forgotten African empires, that would actually be accurate and there would be a lot of history to have genuine pride in.

It's a fact that a lot of genuine African history that actually connects with Western history doesn't get covered, whether due to conscious or accidental bias. That should be fixed.

I agree. I think part of it is, as I said above, is both genuine ignorance and the fact that Africa is something of a 'dirty word' to some people. I also suspect there's some hostility due to the fact that most of the great African empires were Muslim. Mali, Kanem-Bornu, Songhaï, Adal, the Almoravids, Sokoto, all of the Swahili city-states...

Except of course that people had been trading back and forth across the Mediterranean for millennia. Especially before the rise of Christianity and Islam, people in Greece, Egypt and Palestine had much more in common with each other than people tend to assume. That's because SJW's are extremely myopic and unaware of cultures outside of the US. Or even within the US. I don't see many of them helping out American Indian causes, and I doubt they'll ever mention the Métis or Cambodian refugees.

I would argue its even richer than Europe for several reasons. Africa is a much larger continent and larger population base, with five major language families that are entirely unrelated. Also unlike Europe, many African civilizations continued their traditional religions until very recently, if they stopped practicing them at all. We have very little idea of how the pagan Greeks worshipped their gods, let alone the Celts, Slavs or Dacians, but we know a great deal about the Zande and their beliefs.

Could be referring to the Zulu supreme being called uNkulunkulu. I believe in pre-Christian times uNkulunkulu was portrayed as having both male and female traits though after contact with the Christian missionaries he took on decidedly more masculine traits (though I might be mixing the Zulu's creation myths with another civilization's here; SA isn't my specialty so I apologize if I'm wrong). The modern Zulu and Xhosa people still use the name uNkulunkulu both for god in their traditional religions AND as the name for the Christian god.

To be fair, the SJW's misappropriation of other culture's mythologies amuses me. It's essentially taking another culture's creation myth and using it to justify their transgender/crossdressing/genderfluid identity. Sometimes (actually probably more often than not) they are misrepresenting or misinterpreting another culture's practices. It's especially funny because many African civilizations do have strict gender roles and homosexuality is even a crime in several modern African nations (there was even the issue of Uganda wanting to make it a capital offense).

Exactly. As I said earlier, in the UK and Commonwealth, 'black' has not only been used for people of sub-Saharan African and Diasporic descent, but sometimes for South Asian and Australian Aboriginal communities too.

Sometimes by themselves as well. Ethiopians and Somalis are both linguistically and genetically related to other Afro-Asiatic peoples in Arabia and the Middle East. Conversely there are decidedly light skinned Berber peoples in the Maghreb who probably wouldn't be considered 'black' (and darker skinned Berber peoples like the Touareg in Mali and Niger who might).

Which is another important point. Almost all black Americans (and Afro-Caribbeans, Afro-Brazilians, etc) are descendant from West and Central African peoples like the Yoruba and Kongo. Although most blacks in the Americas can't know their ancestry for sure its rather racist to lump the entire bloody continent together and pretend that black Americans have magical ties to Ethiopia or Tanzania or Uganda simply because they share the same skin tone. It's rather akin to saying all whites must Ukrainian or Spanish or Finnish or Hungarian simply because they're white.

By that same token, there's also the Indian Ocean Diaspora and a trans-Saharan Diaspora as well. There are people of black African heritage still running around Morocco, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Iraq, southern Arabia. It's not something that gets talked about much but it's damned interesting.

I've always said, its probably a safe assumption that ancient Egyptians had a similar range of skin tones to modern Egyptians and people living in surrounding areas like Libya, Sudan, Palestine, etc. Egyptians range from 'wheat' coloured (that is seriously a term I've heard Egyptians use) to brown to fair skinned. I fail to see how that doesn't reflect what we see in artwork.

Not to mention that the Copts have a continuous history going back to the arrival of Christianity. They even use a modern form of Egyptian in their liturgies. I don't know how much more 'Egyptian' you can get than speaking EGYPTIAN in your church services. But yes most 'Arab' Egyptians have at least some Coptic ancestry (and likely Greek, Turkish, Berber, Circassian, Armenian, Nubian, Persian, Assyrian, Macedonian, Roman, Hittite, etc. depending on how far back we want to go; hell Muhammad Ali Paşa was of ALBANIAN descent of all things).

The most avowed Afro-centrists claim that before colonization, Africans built powerful empires and cities far greater than anything the West had ever seen, were beacons of tolerance and progressivism, and contributed more to science, math, and collective human knowledge than any whiteys ever did... But they still managed to get enslaved and conquered by primitive, backwards honkeys with almost no resistance.

I'm not at all justifying slavery or colonialism, but seriously, how can anyone claim all those things but then then turn around and blame white people for everything?

I would argue its even richer than Europe for several reasons. Africa is a much larger continent and larger population base, with five major language families that are entirely unrelated. Also unlike Europe, many African civilizations continued their traditional religions until very recently, if they stopped practicing them at all. We have very little idea of how the pagan Greeks worshipped their gods, let alone the Celts, Slavs or Dacians, but we know a great deal about the Zande and their beliefs.

I think the reason you'll never see Tumblrites mention this is because, surprise surprise, many of these legends are "patriarchal" or "oppressive" in the way they hate and they don't want to deal with that. They sure love to talk about how African culture was wiped out and obliterated but ask them to name parts of that culture specifically and they'll draw a blank or perform some kind of absurd mental gymnastics about how it's not "problematic." It's like what you mentioned about the homophobia in Africa. They just kind of sweep it under the rug and never point out how hypocritical it makes them.

I'm surprised they didn't mention how nearly all the gods were rapists, even the black/disabled/pansexual ones. And that a lot of the goddesses were guilty of massive victim blaming. (Oh, my husband raped you? Let me horribly curse you and destroy your life.) And that Athena was viewed as "safe" because she was a virgin, and wouldn't have any children that might eventually take over from their fathers. And that Greek mythology is, overall, nearly as sexist as Holden is.

Gee, it's almost like people living in the Mediterranean area well over 2000 years ago had very alien ideas about gender and sexuality. How can anyone be this damn stupid?

I'm featuring queer characters, characters with physical disabilities, characters with mental illnesses, and ethnically I'm including Anglo-Saxons, Celts, and Scandinavians, but I know there were plenty of PoC and I want to include them; however, I'm (unsurprisingly) having trouble finding information.
