Xi Jinping is "no dictator" and China's Communist Party "listen to the public," ex-New York mayor and businessmen Michael Bloomberg said while shrugging off a Hong Kong question. Why is he serving as China apologist? Funny you should ask..

Also Silicon Valley is so desperate to suck Red China's dick because China is the one market they have never been able to break into. All their apps, websites, and online services get blanket banned by Beijing, allowing state-sponsored Chinese clones and copycats to duplicate their product/service and secure an unbreakable monopoly in the Chinese market.
Well yeah, they weren't able to break in because they were kept out as a matter of state policy. Youtube would have been canned eventually for some reason so that China could protect its own domestic knock-offs. So that video of Chinese paramilitaries cruelly beating up unarmed Tibetans was just the catalyst, not so much the reason Youtube had to go. Similar stories for eBay, Uber, Twitter and so on... all got fucked with, fined, censored and pushed out in different ways but the end result was the same; get out of the way for China's knock-off of your product whose board answers to - and takes direction from - the very top (and whose family members just so happen to have been shareholders back from before anyone had ever heard of these companies). Even shameful capitulations of their supposed values (like Yahoo infamously handing over a dissident's emails) never really got these companies anywhere - as proven by how a large chunk of their Alibaba stake was later stolen off them by the Chinese state with barely a murmur in the cowardly Western press and not a word from President Obama.

But it should be pointed out that it'd be wrong to say that Western tech companies have no presence in China. Aside from how every educated Chinese I've ever met seems to have a Facebook account, Big Tech has happily worked with China in testing out the kind of Big Brothery shit that could (still, just about) cost people their jobs in the freer societies of the West but are enthusiastically embraced by the commies (until they've figured out their knock off, cancelled future payments and told the tech company to come back when they have something new to steal). Western tech firms were there helping them set up the Great Firewall and they've been there, mixed up in sleazy shit, ever since. So even though everyone knows the meme that Google was "kicked out of China" they have in fact always had offices in China and have several on the mainland at the moment; it was just that Google search and email was getting too much market share and the commies wanted to drive domestic traffic to Baidu and others... so Google suddenly became unusable. (China is still a communist country and anyone saying otherwise is a brainlet.) But really, the California Tech Left and the Chinese Communists are ever more obviously ideological allies these days and it feels like a very long time ago that these hip trendy new billionaires who wear T shirts and jeans to work were virtue signalling about how censorious, thin-skinned and bad China is. Now, instead we have shit like Zuckerberg flattering Xi Jinping's Internet supremo, Lu Wei, with a copy of On The Governance of China conspicuously placed on his desk for the smirking goon's visit. (Bottom right of photo.)

Lu Wei, not too long after this photo was taken, was kicked out of his job and given a 14 year jail sentence for "bribery".

I've been following this somewhat since the protests broke out. The amount of civilians that are being killed as a result of this is deplorable. Haven't posted anything because everything I have to say about the Hong Kong police and the CCP is too controversial and might cost me some social cred-

Oh wait, lemme look at this again.
*checks drivers license*
*sees "USA" on it*

Oh right, I'm an American and no one's gonna tell me how to think.

Fuck China, free Hong Kong

I can't wait until the stories come out of the Chinese run Death Camps about them having a breeding program with the women just to have babies that live for a year or two before being harvested for black market organs.

I agree. 0 protestors killed, despite all their provocations?

Hong Kong has literally SEVEN MILLION screaming Chinese. The last thing anyone needs is any more Chinamen.

I don't know what people supporting this are hoping for. It's just "China = bad so fuck china" musing.

This is the Chinese province of Guangdong. Hong Kong is not on this map.

1570977448979.png

This is the South China Sea around Guangzhou, or the Guangzhou Bay. An area of port cities forcefully leased by the Qing Empire to Colonial powers in the 1800s. It is very developed and very populous. Hong Kong is the last of these four cities that was returned to China. The rest are fully integrated into mainland China, Hong Kong is still under a One China, Two Systems rule.

Hong Kong has a population of 5 million, the Guangdong province alone has a population of about 113 million (more people than Taiwan, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine - only about 30m less than all of Russia and 10m less than Japan). There is a joke in China: "If we go to the coast and spit at Japan, they will drown."

CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, Hong Kong is NOT Hainan.

1570977856510.png

Many people believe the large island south of China is HK and that it's like Taiwan. It is not. Hong Kong is physically, for all intents and purposes, a part of the Mainland. There is no strait to cross, there is a river. A regular rifle can shoot across it. Taiwan has a much better defense against China, Hong Kong has no such separation.

So yes, obviously, Hong Kong is super, mega fucked. They are recognized by the UN as part of China. They are recognized internationally as part of China. China has mostly adhered to its agreement following the end of the UK lease on Hong Kong.

The US will not agree to help because China is our single largest business partner.
The UK will not agree to help because they're leaving the EU in a few days (!!!) and will be left without any trade deal to Europe, so it's an inextremely inopportune time to piss off more global manufacturing hubs.
Russia will not agree to help because Russia does not have an interventionalistic pro-democracy system and is currently strengthening its business ties with China by building rails from China to Europe.

So who's left? Who will rush in to help the Hong Kongers? No one, because they are a part of China and if they had an issue with it they should have left by now. Sorry.

Make no mistake, this is allowed to go on because China is testing things. They are testing crowd control methods. They are testing chemicals. They are testing police deployment strategies and clean up mechanisms. They're experimenting with resistance technology and counter-propaganda methods. They're seeing how this plays out internationally and how diplomats react. They're seeing how tough and committed to democracy the west really is. They're also, most importantly, testing facial recognition and other machine learning police tools.

Why test these things? Because China wants to make its"One China, Two Systems" policy a "One China, One System" policy by 2049, and there's a big island who will need similar encouragement very soon.
