The House of the Dead, one of the most popular Zombie shooter arcade games, Made by SEGA.

the bosses are named after tarot cards like the chariot, hangedman, and magician.

it was also known for its awkward voice actign and movement.

it was 1998, the curien mansion incident, agents Thomas Rogan and Agent G must stop Dr. Roy Curien before he unleashes his army of zombies and monsters on the world

all of the games had great soundtrack, like the magician,

then the game followed up with house of the dead 2, which are two agents trying to find agent G,

then there was house of the dead 3, which features Thomas Rogan's Daughter, Lisa, and Agent G.

then house of the dead 4, whic features agents james taylor and kate green, and later agent G.

then came, house of the dead: overkill. which is a prequel to the fist game.

Then there was House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn. after 9 years of silence, the series finally made a comeback!

I am glad to see I am not the only one disappointed that there's no 'Typing of the Dead'-option in the poll.

I've honestly never played any of the games, nor have I seen the movie.

I imagine I'm not missing much, especially when it comes to the movies.

Ah....the game that started off my love of zombies

Basically when I was like 7 or 8 I would occasionally go to a local bowlplex (crappy bowling ally chain aimed at fucktard kids) with family or friends, and since I was shit at bowling (no hand eye coordination ya see) I would get bored, and on one of these occasions I was allowed to go to the little arcade with a bunch of tokens. There I saw this thing.

Naturally I was fucking drawn to it and spent a good hour inside, grinding through my tokens as I slowly learned how to shoot straight with the crappy lil arcade gun. It was one of the best gaming experiences of my fucking life, and every time I went back to that shitty bowling ally I would spend most my time on this machine until they took it out

After trying the game again a few years back on a friend's sega......yeah the game has not held up too well in my opinion, and upon finding out the game was supposed to have a story I was amused to see it was even more hilariously bad than that of the Resident Evil series, but I can forgive all that for the fact that it marked my transition from crash bandicoot and age of empire to a wider bloodier world of vidya, and marked my initiation as a lifelong zombie fan (goddamn it I was fucking imagining up zombie survival scenarios nearly 15 fucking years before TWD swarmed the genre with normies and hipsters. sheeit I saw the original dawn of the dead before the remake was even out!)

So yeah, a lot of fond memories of this game. So much so that I wont even mention the damn films

I fucking love this series. The premise is simple: shoot the zombies. How can you not love that?

The gore in 3 was incredible. I’m partial to 2, but 1 has charm, but 4 is the black sheep of the series I’m afraid

If I had to grade it on arcade excitement, maybe 2. I fed so many quarters to 1 when I was a lad. But 3 is fantastic on the Xbox and Wii

(Also it’s only 2 that has the really bad voice acting)

I remember when the original game came to my local arcade. The preview loop used to scare me.

One of the first light gun games I ever played besides Area 51 and some other game where you went from shooting bank robbers to Columbian drug lord goons. The first House of the Dead was the one I played the most since the places I been to had a machine (one was at my old college before they got rid of its arcade and made it into a room for people to play their laptops in, the other some Chuckee Cheese knock-off that had a working unit that seemed to let you have only 3 lives max). Last visit to Vegas there were some working machines though the controllers for them have really seen better days.

Also glad Overkill got a Steam port as Typing of the Dead, complete with the original game and its additional levels. Shame they changed the scenes with the shirtless zombies to go from backhanding it with your gun to just something less awesome, like picking up a hammer and hitting it. Would be nice if a sequel had Washington as a playable character.

Also like how Zombie Revenge is on there. When I was a young and stupid child, I remember a bowling alley on a military base having one of the machines. Mediocre beat em up but it was truly fun to beat the shit out of zombies with your fist, even if I played crappy and the bosses may of been the sort that can cheese you into spending more quarters.

Stories are no doubt hilariously bad. Best way to protect the loife cycle is to just unleash zombies on the world. Really though, it's HotD and RE that may as well start ones interest in zombie based vidya.

I love House of the Dead, but the only one I’ve actually been able to play so far is Typing. It’s good, cheesy fun. I’m holding out hope that someday I’ll find 4 at an arcade; also its boss theme is fucking lit.

oh yeah that game
I played that in the arcades once or twice, seemed fun enough. Between not getting that or Cannon Spike I must have had something against buying beat-em-ups around that time.

I loved these “light gun” (shut up, I grew up playing Hogan’s Alley on NES) games at the arcades, but I always was such garbage at House of the Dead. I could beat Area 51 with one credit, but HotD just wouldn’t go my way.

I remember there was a pc version for some of them but I don't know if they work on modern hardware. There is MAME which could emulate the games though it won't be the same experience like using a gun. And if you got Steam, Typing of the Dead: Overkill is an option, especially with mods that give you custom phrases.

resident evil and house of the dead were my shit during the late nineties.

sucks that the fist game never got a proper home port. Even the pc version is just the saturn version with slightly better graphics, I think. Just like all the sega games at that time.
