Experiencing zero food shortages, deliveries are all still on time. Lots of cafes, restaurants and shops have shut down - but that's all due to various lockdowns / shift to online shopping. Companies that had resilience against lockdown were generally fine, or experienced an increase in business. People are struggling to hire people for shit-tier jobs, that seems to be a global issue.

Politics is all kinds of fucked, but not sure Brexit is the catalyst there. Gender-obsessed weirdos, commies and two parties that don't really know what what they stand for anymore will kinda do that on it's own.

UK Police are worthless faggots, nothing new there - on the same trajectory they've been on for the last decade, Brexit didn't really make a difference.

The shortage has been there for a long time, but the single market allowed a certain amount of driver arbitrage, which hide the full extent of the problem. The issue was changes to the working time directive for drivers, which changed how their working hours were counted; rather than just counting hours driven, it counted any activity they did around the truck, including loading supervision, inspection, breaks, a bunch of other stuff. Turned barely profitable runs into net losses. That and a bunch of other regulatory requirements, which were only imposed because various european governments couldn't control illegal immigration, drove (heh) a lot of experienced drivers out of the market entirely. It turned it into a constant churn of new drivers, who work for a few years and then leave in disgust.

I looked into getting an HGV license about 10 years back, but I was advised to not bother by a friend, who had been a driver until fairly recently at that point. He said the pay wasn't worth destroying your health over, and the risk of being shopped for something entirely beyond your control wasn't worth it either.

Brexit blocked the driver arbitrage across one of the busiest routes in the market, revealing the systemic problem and forcing the authorities to confront the problem head-on. It's leading to some actual change now, including wage increases and - hopefully - better hours. Funny how that works.

The UK is importing more than ever from the EU, meanwhile British products are subjected to import controls so they can't compete in the economic zone. It will be more interesting in the next year or so when the UK is actually forced to abide by their international agreements.

Right now, the UK is illegally allowing EU products in without custom checks. So all it will take is like China, the US, Japan, etc to file a complaint with the WTO and the UK will face serious economic sanctions unless they either quit the WTO or apply the trade barriers required by their withdrawal agreement.
