How to do combo moves in Tekken 7 -

So I picked up Tekken 7 awhile back (on the PC with a controller), and I'm not a regular fighting game player. Whenever I try to do characters' combo moves, they seem to only work whenever they want to.

I'm unsure if I'm pushing the control stick too fast, too slow, or something else, and I don't have much for reference. (I have a handful of other non-fighting games such as Metal Gear Rising and Bloodstained which included special moves that required some control stick combo, and I haven't had as much trouble performing them as I have in Tekken 7). If anyone has any advice on this, I'd appreciate it.

I haven't played 7 but I've played A LOT of 1-3/tag plus some 4 and 5, and while they have loosened up from game to game as it got faster the input buffering isn't the same as in other fighting games.

So I'll be going off of the old games: It's a bit like a rhythm game where inputs needs to be timed with what the character is doing or about to do so it's kinda "bap-bap---bap-bapbap". For any casual tekken player like me, go back and play 2 and do Yoshimitsus 10-hit combo, it's so strict with the input timing and it switches up the rhythm... Then compare that to Soul Edge.

Go into training mode and figure out the timings of the Yoshi combo, then maybe Paul's, iirc that one also mixes things up a bit but it's way easier to pull off, Kazuya and Heihachi was easier to pull of and King's grapple combo always broke my brain. Just to get a sense of when the game accepts inputs. 7 is probably way more forgiving but I can't imagine that they've completely abandoned that system.

Its all about getting the timing and getting into a rythm with the buttons. It also depends on the character you pick someone Katarina is a good start and if you get used to her move set you will be fine if you move on to the rest.

Find specific strings. Move lists have the ability to show what the move looks like. There's also an in game guide on the inputs.
