M-A is kinda two things really. The main site which is pretty good actually and genuinely informative, despite being a giant autistic anthill (or maybe because of being a giant autistic anthill, I don't know.) The reviews are often good quality as well because the powers that be tend to zap any review which is low effort or obvious trolling or fanboyism (UltraBoris and his demolition of Master of Puppets giving it a 0% as commercial pap is defensible even if you don't agree with it.) There's also lots of verification of facts about bands, releases, and songs so generally, if you need to know something about any metal release, be it a classic Slayer album or the demo by that band from down the road, they'll probably know about it or be able to point you in the right direction.

The forums, though, are horrific. They didn't used to be; back in the mid 2000s they were fairly good, albeit riven with TR00 KVLT edgelording. Now, though, it's just stupid.

Metal-Archives is unrivaled as Metal's reference site. The administration knows a Metal album when they hear one, so it's perfect for resolving a dispute over an individual band's compositional grammar. The few bonafide Metal bands or musicians unlisted usually aren't there due to the technicality of failing to have a bonafide release (ie: a legit downloadable or physical album / EP out). As to the "giant autistic anthill" comment, Metal subculture consists of very meticulous, nerdy people (ie: autists) singlehandedly dedicated to filtering out the wheat from the chaff, so it's foreseeable Metal-Archives would reflect that. Metal-Archives exists because it runs on a steady flow of contributions from a wide range of obsessive autists. Virtually no other music subculture I can think of aside from perhaps Electronica enthusiasts or Raveheads (I don't know) could produce a website similar to Metal-Archives. The only other site I can think of that comes close is Rate Your Music / Sonemic.

As to the forums, it's best to stay away. Earthcubed is perhaps the best poster there. The rest can go to hell.

By now, you're all aware of the controversy related to Antifa successfully canceling Taake's show.

Metal-Archives collective hot take on the issue can be seen in this thread. For the most part, the residents condemn the actions of Antifa picking the wrong target. At around page 2 is when the discussion starts going off the rails, but I'd like to draw attention to this specific comment as its sentiment was echoed by Morrigan a few posts later. It's also enlightening as to why Antifa continues to gain support from others on the left:

In my experience, that isn't actually true for the most part. Most fans don't know or care much more about genres than fairly broad terms like "black metal" and "traditional metal" which suggest roughly what a band sounds like, and even then they're much more likely to say "sounds like X other band" than give a complicated genre name. This includes a lot of the musicians themselves.

Metal-archives is specifically for the spergier fans, but there aren't that many of them. The forum has a pitifully low active member count; I only see 11 members on now, and that's higher than I've seen it at other times. The political sperging doesn't help with that, since metal fans don't tend to be a very PC lot for the most part. For all the wailing they did about Kingdom Come's success, Daniel Vavra wore a Burzum shirt once and should be welcome as part of the subculture if politics weren't stressed as much.

There's probably at least a dozen more who hide their online status at a given time. Considering only a handful of right-leaning posters survived the purge, all that's left are users whose politics overlap with Rational Wiki editors.

I mean, the site owner (Morrigan) is a mod of ResetERA. The politics and :autism: are hardly surprising.

The userbase is pretty small these days. I don't remember if it was ever particularly large, but you generally see the same few users floating around now. Most of the longtime mods have left for whatever reasons and have mainly been replaced with Morrigan's real life friends.

The site has largely pushed actual metal discussion to the side for telling each other stupid/fake daily life shit to each other in the Free For All thread, circle jerking over Dark Souls in the Video Game thread and the MASSIVE Trump bitching thread.

Seeing the SJW posters get BTFO for being ultra smug with their "listen and believe or you hate women" nonsense in the Decapitation gang rape thread after the band was cleared of charges was pretty good though.

The forums are shit but there's 1 (one) good thread in them and that's the compilation of rejected album reviews: https://www.metal-archives.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14619. Some of them are fucking hilarious, here for example is a "review" of a demo by some band called Goatfag:

That explains everything. As if I couldn't be more annoyed by her...

Also of intrigue is DeathMetal.org / ANUS's protracted feud with Metal-Archives.

Clash of the :autism:. I remember a feeble attempt to start a metal version of Gamergate when that was around. Most fans told them to piss off with their drama, and it soon faded away, at least in my perception. Seeing them still writing raging screeds about this years later is hilarious.

Again we see the problem of allowing SJWs to infiltrate metal through media as, using that power, they change what it means to be “metal” while trying to purge metal of what makes it unique. At the end of this agenda, they will create a neutered form of metal-rock that will promptly collapse because it lacks all of what makes metal appeal to its audience, and the genre will collapse like the Soviet Union or Pol Pot’s regime. The SJWs will not care, because they got their 15 minutes of fame.

The Metal Archives are literally the Khmer Rouge. Hi, A-Log! :story:

Spergs make Mount Everest out of a mole hill.

So they think the Scottsboro Boys were guilty?

It's amusing and depressing to see liberals, progressives and leftists suddenly backpedal on one of their oldest arguments in favor of free speech.

It's even more amusing that Nazism is considered so much worse than Satanism, rape, and murder, all of which are common topics in the music of tens of thousands of bands on Metal-Archives. But it does explain why AC/DC isn't on Metal-Archives, when Hispanic Satanist murderer Richard Ramirez was a huge fan of theirs.

Contrary to popular belief and despite their influence on some bands, AC/DC's not really Metal. They're more of a bluesy Hard Rock band. Same with Led Zeppelin and Cream. I don't want to derail this thread too far, but so goes the reasoning why those guys aren't listed.

Anyway, that post was tellingly from the Trump salt thread which I linked to earlier ITT. I sincerely hope another term in office will make the whole community collectively hemorrhage because these cocksuckers deserve every bit of it.

Can you copy that recent screencap and post it as a quote? It's too small for me to read.

It would be the free speech of the site founders to ban Nazi bands from the site, though. Free speech doesn't matter in this regard, if we're talking about defending the bands' being allowed on here. If site founders see an issue with hate speech and modern Nazis calling for exterminations and murder and violence, and they think that should be oppressed, then it would logically follow that they would carry that view into their own works. Aryan Terrorism and Slave Whipping Blasphemy are still bands on this site. The content of their music appears no different from the hate speech disgorged from the mouths of Neo-Nazis. There is nothing positive about them.

Now, this can revive the old "entertainment doesn't inspire bad behavior" argument, but frankly, in some cases it can. Many modern Neo-Nazis have been inspired by things like the novel The Turner Diaries. White Christian terrorist, Timothy McVeigh was a fan of that book. Stupid people will do stupid things as inspired by media and entertainment, and sometimes, those stupid people are catastrophically dangerous.

Basically, if the site founders and admins are against hate speech and see it as different than regular free speech, and see that speech as dangerous and threatening, and they think there is reason to curb that speech, then logically, they would follow-through on that view. In the same way that places like GoDaddy and Apple have now, eventually, started curbing any support working with Nazi groups.

If this kind of rhetoric is better left unheard, if their message is vile and dangerous, then by all means dump it. It would be within the free rights of (admittedly, from an American point of view pertaining a Canadian site) MA to disallow Nazi bands because of who they are, if they view those bands as dangerous, unsavory, what have you.

I think there was also a band on here that praised Bin Laden.

Oh, I agree, I'm just poking fun at the (lack of) logic that guy is expressing. We all know Black Sabbath and every other popular metal band has been linked to all sorts of murders and criminality.

Old news, but it's still just as rich considering the personalities in that thread haven't changed an inch: Metal-Archives reacts to the Zimmerman verdict.

The thread degenerates very quickly, but I'll drop some choice posts. Thankfully, the thread ends on a sobering final post where even one of the moderators gets sick of his co-mod's rhetoric. If you want, read the thread to see what you think is rich:
