Depends. Mayhem is mostly OK because the current band is not espousing racist shite. Burzum always brings out the "I cannot enjoy anything by that man at all". I think the fact he was more a session musician in Mayhem keeps that distance enough for them to be ok with it.

Funny thing is, they will balk and bitch over Peste Noire or some of the more overt bands, and shit like Murduk which is mostly the members rather than the music. But they will still profess a love for Deathspell Omega, even though the singer is an out-and-out racist. The hypocrisy is the annoying part, and least stay consistent in your disapproval if it means that much to you.

They are still fine with Led Zep and shit like that though, you know, Jimmy Page kidnapping and raping a 13 year old girl. Because racism is the worst crime ever, more so than child rape.

I suspect there's also an element of snobbery about it. DSO are okay because they produce pretentious fart-huffing avantgarde stuff and therefore are okay because they're being intellectual and liking them allows them to get their nuts tickled with the smell of intellectual superiority.

Everyone dismisses the criticisms of not allowing certain bands on there as "omg why isn't my chemical romance on metal archives" but the whole insistence on a certain standard of composition to be considered "metal" is completely arbitrary. Please tell me why crossover thrash is considered "metal" enough for MA but metalcore in general isn't, even though they both combine metal and punk and the term "metalcore" was coined by a crossover album. Or why Ghost is in, yet Slipknot isn't. You might argue that Slipknot shouldn't be in since nu-metal is "false" metal, but that holds no water when you already include bands in predominantly "false" genres (Motley Crue and Twisted Sister are in despite being hair metal, Winds of Plague is in despite being deathcore).

To be fair, that's probably because MA used to be inhabited almost entirely by the tr00 kvlt brigade who hated anything that wasn't a demo or a split 7" vinyl recorded on an answerphone left in a dishwasher and limited to 666 hand numbered copies.

There was a user on there called UltraBoris who gave Master of Puppets a zero because he was kind of a troll. But he did know his stuff and do genuinely informative reviews a lot of the time even if I didn't always agree with him. He also did a parody grindcore act called "Regurgitated Cow Fetus" which was absolutely spot on, right down to the song which was just incomprehensible gargling followed by the line "I have sex with many midgets."

At this point more bands need to put swastikas and shit everywhere and write songs about killing Jews for Hitler since it's as effective for warding off soyboys (and occasionally making them give free promotion like all the giant lists of REEEEEE NAZI BANDS on Rateyourmusic) as pentagrams and dismembered babies scared off the fundie moralfags back in the 80s/90s.

NS/quasi-NS stuff is so woven into the fabric of second wave black metal, you can't really disavow it all and end up with a clear picture of the genre. So you end up with this weird cognitive dissonance in the forum culture where you can say Nokturnal Mortum's "Call of Aryan Spirit" is your favorite song of all time and just be met with a suspicious side-eye or two, but if you use the word soy or accidentally refer to Absu's tranny guitarist as "he" you flat-out eat a ban.

The resounding theme I'm getting from this entire thread is that, as @Null once said, free speech is a principal held by exceedingly few people. In fact, people who claim to care about it are lying especially when confronted with ideas that contradict their priors. With minor exception, people want ideological consistency and convenience, and their true colors show whenever those are challenged. The fact that people in this thread are very comfortable advocating violence against actual and perceived enemies speaks to this.
