So Amazon just released this series, touting Al Pacino's first TV role. Shame it had to be so terrible. I'll try to avoid spoilers, but I marathoned this series because I was fascinated with its idiocy. The trailers make it look like a Tarantino-esque romp into some good old ultra-violence against Nazis who secretly invaded America to set up a Fourth Reich. Sounds fun? Nazi hunting has always been an interesting premise, and a pulpy, Tarantino way to do it seemed interesting.
However, it is anything but that. This show has no idea what it wants to be. It wants to try to be a historical piece, an educational piece, a drama, an action series, over-the-top villains, an absurdist take with fourth wall breaking....its just all over the fucking place. There's no one set tone of the show. Its one that doesn't have an identity at all. Fuck, it even breaks out a dance routine randomly at one point. They even do a gameshow about 'Why people hate Jews' that interrupts the flow and serves as some fucktarded lecture and wastes time.
The main problem comes from the lead. It takes way, WAY too long to get him into Nazi hunting mode. We're talking 8 episodes out of 10 here. His existential crisis of whether 'Is this right?' was fucking eye-rolling. Shit or get off the pot. There's too much drama bullshit that gets in the way of sleuthing and tracking down Nazi war criminals. Also, it isn't even sure of its own morality on the subject and its not 'let the viewer decide' issue. The problem is the show is arguing with itself over whether its good or bad constantly. The writers definitely had cold feet just showing them blowing holes in Nazis and letting viewers decide if hunting down these old dudes was right or wrong.
There's a sub-plot with a black female lesbian FBI agent and its not even that, its just so fucking boring. This is a show about Nazi hunting, allegedly. Not about gay romance troubles in the 1970s. Every-time she came on the screen I wanted to fast forward. I just honestly did not care. I did not care about the racial tensions of the 1970s they had to throw in, or any of that shit. Legitimately, give me killing Nazis.
But the main problem comes from the major plot of the show. The key as to why all these Nazis infiltrated. It wasn't a Nazi program. It wasn't the Reich's secondary plan if it fell. No, it was Operation Paperclip. For those that don't know, after WWII, the US and the Soviets were in competition to recruit Nazi war-criminals and scientists to enrich research. It was done by the OSS and they were shipped over here. The main problem is that Operation Paperclip was known about since 1946. The show treats this like it was some major conspiracy in the US government that they had to hide at all costs and would kill over. It was far from this. Operation Paperclip broke December 1946. And it wasn't little known. There were stories in 'The New York Times', 'Newsweek' and other major publications. There was a fucking Gallup poll on it asking Americans what they thought of it, and it was met with a resoundingly 'bad' idea. Elanor Roosevelt and Albert Einstein spoke out against this. The show does everything to convince you that this was shocking and it was done because 'nobody gave a shit about the Jews'.
Not the case. Americans thought it was a bad idea. It was known about since 1946. It wasn't a major conspiracy that people got killed over. So while it tries to paint Americans as bad because they didn't care about the Jews, this is simply untrue. There's even multiple segments to try and shock you like 'THIS SHIT REALLY HAPPENED' (it says that on the screen). They posit this cabinet meeting and all these white dudes laughing about how they didn't give a shit about Jewish lives and wanted the scientists. Again, it had nothing to do with hating Jews or not caring. The simple fact is that at the end of WWII, we were at the brink of war with the Soviets. We became enemies almost instantly. Some wanted to strike at the Russians immediately. This lead to a frenzy to get as much of a lead as possible, which lead to Operation Paperclip. I'm not saying its right or wrong, Paperclip is a very complicated topic and here its reduced to simplicity.
It immediately took me out and almost had me laughing, since Paperclip was never a secret for any length of time. And they're treating it like some major conspiracy and trying to shock you with it. It was pretty sad, honestly.
There's just so much wasted time in this series its kind of shocking to me. The length of time not killing or sleuthing Nazis, the severe lack of action, the idiotic double-crosses and triple crosses, the boring way the Nazi's came into the states (also these Nazis were watched by the authorities, so the fact that they could plan a Fourth Reich is laughable). And the fucking twist at the end, holy shit. Fucking terrible, saw that shit coming. Also it ends with even more goofy shit, trying to be all serious and 'educate' the audience and lecture them, treating them like idiots.
How do you fuck up a show about killing Nazis? Being a pussy about it and trying to attach it to reality when it simply doesn't work. Another really, REALLY dumb moment is when the Black FBI agent thinks the story of Hansel and Gretel is about two Germans pushing a Jew into the oven and stealing her money. The amount of dumb shit this show goes through is miraculous. I feel like they blew 90% of the budget on Al Pacino and just had to fucking fill in the blanks with boring shit instead of action.
