Hypocritical "Comedians" (Robert Webb, Omid Djalili & Friends) - People who pretend to be funny but also hate funny stuff & want to outlaw offensive speech

Cross-post from the Obscure Laughingstocks thread because he belongs here more than there. Nick Pettigrew is not a household name but has written for TV and many online publications. Nick not only polices other comedians for writing offensive jokes, he also makes them himself in secret Facebook Groups. That evidently aren't quite as secret as he thinks. Ooopsie.

Hello everyone. Meet Nick Pettigrew:

In his day job, Nick works for the Courts Service in Croydon, a particularly awful southern suburb of London. He is 46, married, on Citalopram and undergoing a course of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for depression. None of that is very interesting. But there is more to Nick. Lots more.

Nick is also an aspiring comedy writer. He's actually pretty good at it. He writes for satirical online paper the Daily Mash (think a UK version of the Onion), which recently got a series on the BBC, which he also writes for. He used to be a standup comedian until his mental health got too bad. He is a notorious twitter warrior. Now I don't follow his Twitter, but it's OK, he posts his "greatest hits" to Facebook so we don't miss any of his genius:

View attachment 627144

For those who don't know, Norman Tebbit was a Conservative politician whose hotel room was bombed by the IRA in the 80's. His wife was crippled and several of his friends died.

Nick HATES fellow satirist Jonathan Pie. HATES him, supposedly because of wrongthink (Pie dares criticise the Left whilst also being on the Left) but really it's because Pie has the career in comedy that Nick is desperate for. Nick hates him so much that he personally intervened to keep Pie off the Mash's TV show.

As you may be picking up, Nick is a bit of a Social Justice Warrior:

Nick is a crusader against racism, sexism, transphobia and wrongthink in general. In particular, he is on a crusade to eliminate all wrongthink from standup comedy. His particular mode of operation is to identify "problematic" comedians, then harass people on his Facebook who are friends with them to try to bully them into severing ties. These are all in the last 3 months. There are others that he bawleeted after people pointed out that policing other people's friends lists is a fucking weird way to spend your evening:

So, Nick likes everyone's comedy to be squeaky clean. Wrongthink and wrongtalk are completely unacceptable. Completely. Anyone with a career in comedy should have it destroyed for such awfulness, with Nick as prosecutor-in-chief.

So it would be horribly hypocritical of Nick to, say, post racist, ableist, sexist, faith-based and transphobic jokes in a secret Facebook group dedicated to making fun of women, blacks and the disabled, wouldn't it? And it would be awful for him if there was a mole in this group, wouldn't it?

Wouldn't it??

Nick knows his secret posting habits could get him in a spot of bother:

Wow that it the exact example of comedians I hate it's fine to make offensive jokes but to make offensive jokes and then attack others for the exact same shit (Or in a lot of cases a lot less than what he has done there) is really fucking low, this kind of fucker needs a spine.

IMO Mock the Week lacked the consistency to be a decent satire show. HIGNFY had a consistent host and team captains that allowed for interplay to develop between them, not a surprise why people say it went to pot after Deayton left (even if the first episode after his departure was hysterical). Have a revolving door of stars and it becomes a competition to attract the most attention and get yourself future bookings, so it becomes more about the person than the jokes they're telling.

There's also the lesser problem of BBC1. Shows regularly move there once it gets popular, and with the move it comes under more scrutiny to appeal to a wider audience, which leads to tonal shifts and guest changes. QI was ruined in this way.

I hope Hugh Dennis isn't a cunt.

It always felt to me like a showcase for the comedians’ acts. Like, this routine about Nigerian airlines is funny and all, but what does it have to do with the Royal wedding?

The Daily Mash is shit anyway. The first few articles you read are kind of funny, but after that you realise that most of it could be written by a bot. Try going through five articles at random and not finding one that opens with”[Opinion held by the writer,] it has emerged.”

The television show they do, The Mash Report, is even worse. The whole thing's basically just a load of leftist apologia:

His speech patterns and mannerisms are so identical to John Oliver that I expected the video to end with some kind of big showstopping scene where people come out in costumes and a huge banner unfurls that says Trump Bad

That’s because he wants to be. We’ve been trying to replicate the Daily Show and its clones for years.

Nish Kumar is such a hack. Case in point he was on a NYE show last year and the best he could do was weak jokes about Brexit, meanwhile a drunk Vic Reeves wiped the floor with everyone.

The issue's pretty complex, firstly having talent doesnt automatically equate with emotionally maturity or genuine political insight. Their are left wing comedians who do provide a great deal of insight into a broad variety of subjects, even if you don't really agree with them (charlie brooker or jonothan pie for example). But most of them are ordinary and so don't actually have a great of genuine insight.

At the same time most british comedians are a product of Thatcher and Blairs britain. In the first you've got a situation where the moral and consensious is conservative. This means moral authoritarianism nudges right so comedian are raised in a world where right wingers like mary whitehouse are the guys disrupting your skit. Later on you've got what we've got now which is Blairs britain where were theorectically liberal morally but everything is still shit and their's nothing obvious to rage at (see above) because they're middle class and their exposure to poverty and horror is minimal and slightly abstract.
There's a concensual shift in moral puritanism from right to left and an entire generation of comedians isnt really equiped to deal with it.
Under those circumstances it's hardly surprising robert spend their time prattling on about toxic masculinity despite the far more pertinant issues such the imminant Brexit shitshow, neo-liberal corporation questionable loyalty to the uk and the massive wave of human suffering caused by Universal credit 'reforms'. Which frankly seems far more relavent for 'hot takes' then why it's okay to cry while having a dick.

Which is why Spitting Image was actually funny-- it was a bunch of subversives poking fun at the moral order. Today, the people who agree with Spitting Image are the moral consensus, and they stamp down on any form of an alternate opinion. To give Mary Whitehouse some credit, she didn't really care about what people thought, only that sex and profanity shouldn't be in public. That's arguably better than policing people's thoughts and opinions.

Necroing the thread because Nish Kumar, who was mentioned further upthread, did a set for a charity lunch at the Lord's Taverners cricket club, tried to make some shitty Brexit jokes and got absolutely BTFO'd by the audience. There's only clips of the end of his set online, but you can see here he's getting booed and apparently someone threw a bread roll at him:

A highlight is at 00:58 when he says "It's dangerous to perform for a group of people largely descended from people who colonised my ancestors", but the best part is at 2:23 when he says "I'll tell you two more things, and then I'll leave" and a great cheer goes up from the crowd. His face at that moment is pure meme material:

This is bar none one of the worst reactions I've ever seen a comedian have to hecklers. I've seen amateur comedians who've handled hecklers better. He says that in his entire time performing comedy, he's never had food thrown at him, and it's obvious that he doesn't have much experience performing to an audience outside the BBC bubble who won't kiss his arse.

At the end, realising he's lost the crowd, he tries to be defiant and say "I'm not going anywhere, full Bercow!" which goes down like a lead balloon before the event organiser comes on and politely escorts him off:

This guy's face says it all really:

Comedy is hard, their's no reason brexit jokes can't work but his execution is terrible, he really should have gone soft ball gentle ribbing preluded by some warm up jokes. Keep it light keep it fun, this isnt the The Comedy Store is where you can test run new material, this is your paycheque. Then he buckles down once it isnt working, which turned a failed gig into a shit show-never let the audience know you're mad.

Their's something about BBC which really takes the edge of your work. If you look at lenny henrys or Jack dee's earlier work it's a lot sharper. Something about the place is poison for stand up observation comedy. Their's a reason they fired frankie boyle.

Being a government run network I assume they’re beholden to every butthurt tranny and/or Mary whitehouse wannabe with too much time on their hands throwing a shitfit because some comedian made a joke they don’t personally agree with

The relationship is a lot weirder than that, it's hard to describe auntie but Schitzophrenic is probably apt. One moments it's pretending the UK is an idealized version of london, the next it's shitting on Corbyn. It can just as easily produce a shit doctor who series where orange man shoots some poor spiders as it can show the horrible effects of global warmning on ecologies .
While it turns stand up to total shit, its also host to have I got news for you.

I think it's because it's expected to cater to everyone that it often comes across as incoherant. But for some reason the place is poison for stand up even if it can produce some incredable comedy sometimes.

Corbyn is hated by a lot of the leftist/liberal establishment. The BBC attacking his is just the British equivalent of Sanders getting spat at by the DNC/mainstream media establishment in the US.

>it's expected to cater to everyone

It only caters to the various flavours of the left.

Skimmed the thread, is this all shitty British "comedians"? I don't like living in a world where the real subversive comedy is right-wing stuff like Moonman, Ben Garrison edits, Sam Hyde, etc
