I thought about making a community watch for writers and nanowrimo -

Backing this. Wattpad is a site for teenage writers that is absolutely overflowing with lolcows and drama. The NaNoWriMo forums are so cringey that it feels like somebody inching a knife towards my crotch the longer I try to explore them.

I've done NaNoWriMo twice before, succeeded one year. This was back in... '09 and '10 I want to say. Anycase, before I joined up with the Farms.

Never got too invested in their forums though. I glossed over them and even back then, just the amount of smugness and twee-ness that wafted from there was obnoxious. I can only imagine how insufferable their forums are now.

So... do it.

Be sure to include ArchiveOfOurOwn as well. Take a look at any of their One Direction fanfics, and you'll see what I mean: mpreg, bestiality, rape, tentacles, diapers... the list just goes on and on :c Here are some examples of typical ones:

I've actually been doing Nano for years now, and I shouldn't be surprised but I am a little bit. I only frequented a few forums whenever I needed the inspiration to keep going, or if I needed somewhere to bullshit when the grind was getting tough. I do remember one particular incident that stood out to me, though, way back a couple of years ago. (generalized to avoid :powerlevel: of course)

So, I was a dumb kid, and it was obvious I was just that because of the way I worded my question and what exactly my question entailed, but it was something stupid about mental illness. Now, I was only trying to learn more about it so I could have a more accurate portrayal of a character, but I had the whole brigade come up to me and tell me how I was wrong for wanting to even portray this character in the first place when I don't have this mental illness and all that jazz. There were so many people trying to fight me on this, on a book by a stupid kid who was probably not even going to get it published anyway! Felt bad, man. But I guess it turned out to be decent fodder for this kind of forum.

Also, looking through the LGBTQ+ Genre subforum at anytime is bound to get you plenty of content. I can't remember exactly what it was at the moment, but there was this one I saw on a few posts in that forum that just blew my mind how they identified. It was one of those "huge string of labels" kind of person.

Archive of our Own is the band camp of the internet. It seems cute and nerdy and like it's just teenagers who want to larp Harry Potter without leaving the house, but the depravity knows no bounds. Of course it would be funnier if it was easier to get through the stories.

You sure there's salt here, OP?

The couple of times I tried (and failed miserably at) NaNoWriMo I found the whole community kind of on the harmless side, everybody being oh so nice to each other. Almost like some sort of church social group, if a church social group was made up of very socially liberal people from San Francisco.

Everybody posting about meeting (or failing to meet) their daily word goals, whether to use Word or Scrivener or LibreOffice, etc. About the only drama I remember on the official forum is somebody making fun of Twilight and people writing fanfics based on it. But even the people you'd think would be provoked were basically "Yeah, its pretty lame, Stephenie Meyer is kind of a tool, but I love it all anyway. "

AO3, Fanfiction.net and Wattpad are a whole different story, of course. But I thought even WattPad is kind of locked down these days, given how they've gone to an ad supported format.

Contra that, I am kind of curious what I might have missed, gotta admit. So I'll subscribe to this thread and see what pops up.

I've yet to see too much drama and weirdness on the NaNo forums, but I was amazed when I checked out the Fanfiction forum and there was not one, but two people writing Hanson fanfics. Like the band Hanson. In 2018.
Fans of obscure shit are awesome.

I'm surprised that I haven't seen a thread for horribad fiction ala the furry art thread and SJW art thread, actually. Might be something to look at in those communities.
