If you were a high school English teacher, which books would you require reading? - Teachers IRL should chime in

"A History of Central Banking and the Enslavement of Mankind", by Stephen Goodson, for obvious reasons.

And "Holes", by Louis Sachar, to lighten things up.

The Three Musketeers: One of my favorite books. Likely my favorite. Only fault in it is when Dumas forgets he's already made D'artagnan a musketeer, so he makes him a musketeer, again.

The Gotrek & Felix series: Not because they're well-written, because the quality within them is all the fuck over the place, but to show the kids that you don't have to be some uber talented writer to get published.

I read “The Giver” on my own time in middle school after my sibling read it for class. I loved that book, and it was really good read to have early in life. This one is a bit over done, but “The Alchemist” is one of the best books I’ve read. Really thoughtful and a quick read.

My answer would be to immediately kill myself because I cannot conceivably imagine being forced to teach a class of kids who likely don't care and won't ever care about books and actual reading. For real, I think this next generation is going to have the attention span of goldfish. Even if I did get the rare kid who has an appreciation for real literature, the majority common rabble of unenthisiastic kids would just grind down on my desire to teach too harshly. Not only that, but why would I actively want to be a teacher? I'm taking a course in college towards my technical communication degree and in the bullshit introductory segment everyone had to do, every single person in that class besides me put down "hi i wana be a hi schol english teecher" so obviously theres no shortage of upcoming teachers ready to bash their heads against the public school hiring process and make 35,000$ a year teaching kids who hate them, hate the school, and hate the material.
