PUNE: Toilet is a storage room. It is a locker to keep valuables for a few. It is a beautiful structure not to be used for 'dirty' purposes. For many in rural India, toilet is everything but a place for defecation.

Villagers in tribal areas of Nandurbar in Maharashtra did not use toilets for months after construction saying they can't relieve themselves in "such a beautiful structure". Some living in huts said they would use it for storage purpose because it was the only concrete structure they had in the house.
