Soft White Underbelly video and portraits of The Whitakers, an inbred family from Odd, West Virginia. The individuals in this video are brothers and sisters, except for Timmy who is a nephew. The two portraits are from my book Created Equal, which was published by Steidl in 2010, which is out of print now and difficult to find. The first portrait in this video is of Ray, Timmy and Freddie, who passed away in 2016. The second portrait is of sisters Lorraine (holding a small child who is a relative) and Barbara. This was my fourth visit and I’ve given the family a financial gift each time.

I've created a Soft White Underbelly GoFundMe campaign to get the Whitaker family a new home, clothing and food. Here's a link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/swu-new-whitaker-home

are you sure it isn't Alabama?

I get this is a shitpost but still, inbreeding is it's at its worst in the more remote areas, and most of Alabama is relatively developed. Georgia and Tennessee are as well, for that matter. In deep Appalachia, many areas are exclusively white or otherwise racially homogeneous with very few people and (prior to the fairly recent improved infrastructure) very little contact with the outside world due to both geographic and economic reasons. It's also a lot of old blood there, families who have been in the area since they stepped off the boat in the 1700s. Your family trees are going to start looking pretty tangled at some point with such isolation and a low population.

I'm not denying there's inbred hicks in Alabama, because there absolutely are -- it's just that Appalachia (and maybe the swamps down in the delta while we're at it) are more deserving of the inbreeding title.

Sperging aside, cases like this are both extremely sad and deeply unsettling. You can't blame the people who were born from an incestuous pairing because they're not the ones at fault, but with this level of disability, both physically and mentally, there's just no integrating into normal society even if they can take care of themselves in a basic sense. It is nice seeing these people shown more as human beings rather than zoo animals for once, though. A lot of media about incest cases are incredibly dehumanizing.

This entire thing feels extremely fake. The person in the middle looks like they were designed and costumed by someone whose closest brush with reality is watching cartoons. They look like what a coastal elite thinks everyone who doesn't live in Manhattan looks like.

There's also the fact that someone in the comments claims to have dug into the family and find out that they're not brother and sister -in fact, nobody in the family tree is - and the "documentarian" didn't even spell the name right. It's Whittaker, with two Ts.

These people are just retarded/ developmentally disabled, poor and not well cared for, which sadly isn’t all that unusual. Spinning it as inbreeding from “Odd, WV” is just a marketing ploy to get attention.

The Slanton family is one ladder rung above this.

The Amish have an inbreeding problem, or founders effect, but it mostly shows up in as genetic issues that kill the kids before adulthood and mostly vegetables while alive. So do some middle eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, but the problems manifest as genetic abominations that mostly die at birth or shortly after if not for modern medicine. The Hartley girls were one of the few known non-inbred examples of a genetic issue that is far more prevalent among consanguine parents.

Most cases of true “inbred kids” with genetic conditions or founders effect are just vegetables. This group of unfortunates are just poor uncared for tarded people. (Also shitty parents tend to let small kids get subjected to head injuries and beatings which also cause tarded adults)

An interesting case study is the effects of inbreeding in Qatar. Cousin marriage has been extremely prevalent there for centuries, predating Islam in fact. Native Qataris are outnumbered in their own country (but to be fair most other residents are still Arab or from Islamic majority countries) and among them about 1/3 have some sort of health problem particularly when it comes to fertility and hearing. If you compare this with Kazakhs and Kirghiz who practice very strict exogamy (to the point where Kazakh women even promote themselves to foreign men) there’s far less health defects. I don’t work in the Health Industry or for the State Department I just enjoy reviewing data and listening to anecdotes.

Inbreeding usually seems to manifest either as producing vegetables or issues that aren’t quite obvious (as you mentioned infertility, hearing, or mental illnesses, asymmetrical features, chronic health issues)

The Habsburgs are a good example of generations of inbreeding that started off without major problems but then after 200 years of intense incestious marriages got progressively worse till you ended up with lots of dead babies, the “Hapsburg jaw” and the infertile, disabled idiot King Charles II.
