Y'all remember the Intellivision, don't ya? Well, looks like a new Intellivision is coming out soon.

The console's design kinda looks cool (even has a neat looking controller that can be mounted on the system). However, its specs are a whole different story.

Specs.png
The specs are somehow worse than the upcoming Atari VCS (not to be confused with what the Atari 2600 was originally called), which at least has specs that resemble a low-end gaming setup. Here, the Amico is basically a glorified Android TV system, down to its unspecified Snapdragon processor and 2 GB RAM (not upgradeable), and digital only nature. It's also notably more expensive than the VCS; The cheapest VCS costs $199, while the cheapest Amico will cost $249.

So I don't know how well the Amico will fare against the VCS (especially since, as far to my knowledge, not many people are less nostalgic for Intellivision than they are for Atari) , let alone any of the major consoles, but maybe time will tell... or not.

Some footage of gameplay and stuff from the Amico if you're curious:

its a better ouya. the sesame street game in 2nd video is an android/ios game. do you play the games on the controller display?

Looks like it hooks up to the TV and you use the controller screen for various commands and stuff. The original Intellivision had a keypad in that space instead. Amico has motion control and the video shows people using it kind of like a wiimote. It seems like they are trying to recapture the Wii and the Intellivision at the same time. In the video they sperg a lot about the plastics used and all their LEDs (which can thankfully be turned off).

They want this thing to be used for generations. Because a glorified Ouya is gonna have that lifespan.

People looking for modern retrogaming hardware tend to go either for cheap emulation in a package that apes the original system it's emulating (TheC64, all those mini consoles) or FPGA stuff (MiSTER, ZX Spectrum Next etc).

The Intellivision Amico is neither of these.

The op is missing the critical fact that this thing is getting Earthworm Jim 4 as an exclusive. I expect a trashfire if it ever gets released.
I'm guessing Doug TenNapel bought into the whole family-friendly ethos that is possibly the Intellivision Amico's only USP, and doesn't want his creations attached to degenerate platforms such as the PS5. I reckon I'll stick with the original EWJ on my Genesis/Mega Drive if it's all the same.

Tommy Talarico is heading this venture and if anything they're downplaying Doug's role in this if just so the outrage mafia doesn't come after them too hard. I remember Tommy saying somewhere that Doug actually wasn't getting paid(fuck him if he's telling the truth) when some prick went at him for having Doug on the project

He got paid with the licensing rights to use Jim in comics again and went ahead with a really successful Kickstarter for a Jim graphic novel.

I still can't believe they're going through with this. Are there really enough people nostalgic enough or people looking for a novelty console to make this viable? Because I doubt it.

Yeah, I've backed them. Pricy little bastards since these are fat books, but I like them.

Actually they paid upfront for Limited Exclusivity, once this thing bombs expect it to be on other platforms. This is an all digital platform and everything is android based which means there's enough shit already lying around to make porting easy.

Hell I would say EWJ4 is a shoe-in for Limited Run Games to pick up. Especially since they had huge success with the Scott Pilgrim physical release.

A Snapdragon and two measly gigs of RAM? What is this, 2014?
Reminds me of bigger version of the Dreamcast's VMU.
Fun fact; the internal codename of the VMU’s CPU was “Potato”.
