You know those times when you're watching a movie on TV, and they always have to edit something out for content? Like how the NC-17 rated Showgirls becomes almost a PG-13 movie with all the tacked on CG clothes they put on the nude actresses?

Or how in Die Hard, instead of Yipee Ki Yay Mother Fucker becomes Yipee Ki Yay Mister Falcon?

This thread is about the interesting cases of censorship for movies and other content edited for whatever.

One of my favorites is from the movie Private Parts. Howard Stern actually comments over the censorship and it gets so over the top that he flat out says to just rent the movie instead.

You have a favorite case of censorship?

I still like how the original airing of Dragon ball Z had the word "Hell" edited into HFIL, Home For Infinite Losers. It's cringey but I enjoy the creativity behind it.
Also just keeping God as the Japanese word Kami worked as well.

If I recall correctly, I remember watching some TV services trying to censor swear words by completely redubbing the lines. They often were extremely off-sync to the actual lip syncing or sounded nothing like the original actors. It was quite humorous as well, but I feel like this method of censorship is really common.

On a more serious note, self-censorship is probably the most interesting (and worst, imo). People will go through all sorts of mental gymnastics to not make conclusions that are politically incorrect when they explain their views on sensitive issues; it's frankly quite depressing how much people are afraid of public opinion and ostracism.

And the people that do it the most often have the most fucked up thoughts.

I turned it on a "kids & family" music station on iHeartRadio for a younger family member, expecting Disney/kids' soundtracks or something, but found they were just playing regular Top 40 with additional words censored.

I remember in particular they were playing "Hands to Myself" by Selena Gomez. For one matter, that song is about fucking, so it's not appropriate for a kids' station. The pre-chorus says "All of the downs and the uppers keep making love to each other". They reversed the word "love".

So not only is Selena Gomez fucking, she's high as a kite while she's doing it. But slightly obscuring the word "love" makes it suitable for children.

In my country a lot of animes got through a series of censorships. The censorships usually fall in these three types:
1) complete cancellation of the Japanese cultural references and setting, to make the product more 'palatable' to kids
2) changing of dialogues in case of swear words or sexual innuendos
3) visual changes in case of nudity, violence or 'inappropriate' scenes, with cuts or inserction of copy-pasted segments.

Examples: a ton.
- Nobody ever saw episode 200 of Sailor Moon in its complete version, unless they torrented the Japanese original. The network that owned Sailor Moon rights thought that seeing Moon 'naked' for half of the episode would have been traumatizing for kids, so the whole sequence of her saving her enemy is a collection of still frames of Usagi's face and Galaxia standing up in a lawn.
- when Sailorstars was airing, a psychologist said that Sailor Moon could shove children on the path of gayness...so in the Italian edition the Sailor Starlights were changed from girls disguised as boys to boys who switch place with their twin sisters when it's time to fight. This also solved the issue of Seiya constantly hitting on Usagi.
- when in the 2000s the network Mediaset bought the rights of Saint Seiya, they cut away the most part of the fighting scenes, and sepia-colored all the scenes were characters were bleeding. There are no copies of the old masters anymore, so in the new DVD box sets (that use the Mediaset version of the series) a lot of violent scenes I remember seeing when I watched the show as a kid aren't dubbed in Italian, but are in Japanese with subs.
- Naruto has been subjected to uncountable censorships, mainly because of blood and violence.
- Same for One Piece

Pupa was a fucking travesty and this moment was just the cherry on top. I don't get it, either.

That is amazing.
