Is Barb "Protecting" Chris? -

We've all noticed that Barb has become quite restrictive of Chris. She's threatened to change the locks if he goes too far, she nags him on his cell if he's out too long, she insists on cuddling, and now she sits with him while he plays vidya and complains.

Years ago, she was fine with him making an ass of himself at his Attraction Locations. That is, until the Target arrest. After that, she told him to stop using the Attraction Sign and suggested he stop drawing Sonichu subepisodes.

However, whenever Chris was called out for his bad behavior, she (and Bob) always came to his defense as if he did nothing wrong. This makes me wonder if Barb is restricting Chris not because she thinks he's fucking up, but because she wants to protect him from the big bad autistic-fearing world.

If so, she's apparently decided that "protecting" him is worth denying him the right to have even the most trivial of life experiences. She apparently intends for him to spend the rest of his days on earth in her room with her, playing video games while she watches him.

That's worse than a life sentence to prison.

I think it goes above protecting him, because she refuses to let Chris have any privacy, even when he's at home. Plus, she and Chris got busted together. Maybe she'd think the world is against the Chandlers in general? I don't know, I think it's more because she's hoarding him than anything.

She's a lonely, hoarding, senior citizen. She's keeping him close for company and running errands and making sure she doesn't break a hip. It's way more selfish than wanting to protect her special snowflake.

I can't stand people watching me play games, unless they're actually playing the game with me and waiting their turn.

But yeah. I hate to admit this, but I actually feel a bit bad for Chris. After the big leak, I felt no pity for him, but this new leak about his mom restored a tiny little tidbit of pity for him.

This seems to be a recurring theme in Chris's Facebook posts. Barbara is, no doubt, encouraging this paranoia and had convinced Chris that it is indeed her and Chris against the world.

I can't make up my mind whether Barbara is hoarding Chris, as you suggest, or if she simply sees him as a pet. Sad and disturbing either way.

Oh, I don't see much of a difference between those two. I guess if she's hoarding him, she's aware he moves around and talks and stuff. I guess we're just saying that she doesn't think too much about how miserable he must and ignores what he wants, whether that makes him a pet or part of her hoard.

I used to work with 'special needs' individuals (their 'specialness' varied from mental retardation to Autism to physical disabilities). A lot of these individuals had a 'day program' where they would go out into the community with an assistant. The 'day programs' are intended to help these individuals develop social skills.

I'm not sure how things work in the state of VA. Since Chris is receiving SSI I am assuming that he'd have a good chance of qualifying for such a program. There is no age limit and there are lots of adults in these programs, some with emotional and behavioral issues worse than Chris (if you can believe that).

There are also employment programs that cater specifically to special needs individuals. The ones in my state provide employment counseling free of charge. Individuals like Chris, may, in many cases have an advantage over other job applicants as many employers are given incentives to hire 'special needs' people. Walmart is one of those employers. Chris's whining about not being able to find a job because da evil twolls rwined his weputation is complete and utter bullshit. He would probably be able to work and still receive his tugboat (I think the maximum is 16 - 20 hrs. depending on the rate of pay).

Not to sound cruel, but Barbara has to face the fact that she won't always be around for Chris. The sooner he can learn the skills (social and otherwise) the better prepared he will be for the time when she is no longer a part of his life. Her smothering / coddling of him is only going to make matters worse. She should be encouraging him to be more independent.

I'm pretty sure that Rocky is aware of the existence of such programs as well- yet she's done squat to actually help Chris.

Chris is the only person left in her world. Of course she's going to suffocate him and say whatever she can to keep him close. I'm wondering if it will ever reach a point where even Chris can't take it anymore.

What she's doing isn't to protect Chris but to ensure he's always there for her whether he likes it or not.

I think it's a bit of both, I mean, sure, the whole world is playing "kick the autistic" with our poor little snowflake by not solving all of his problems for him, so mother of the year Barb has to use protect on him, but she also knows how much of a fucktard Chris is, so she decides to keep him on the tighest of leashes, as Alec said, not letting him go through the most trivial life experiences.
