Is "get woke, go broke" an actual phenomenon? -

Everytime a corporation has a "woke" commercial or a franchise casts a non-white/transgender actor I see lots of people saying how they're going to boycott said franchise and how said corporation will go bankrupt, but they seem to always be wrong.

Has there ben an actual case of "get woke, go broke", because to me it just seems like people are giving a corporation free advertising.

To me the phrase "get woke, go broke" is quite :optimistic:.

Your thinking in extremes a bit here. Few companies have actually full on collapsed due to going woke (at least immediately). Even then, most "Woke" companies are only doing it for marketing and actually don't give a shit about the grandstanding to any real extent. What people refer to when going "broke" is the failure of the marketing/product being marketed, which happens quite often.

That's sort of my point, people bitch about corporation having a not-white actor and give said corporation a bunch of free press. It's a self own.

Edit: Think of Last of Us 2 as an example, I didn't even know there was going to be a Last of Us 2 but now I know because people keep talking about it.

The biggest exception I can think of is Black Panther, which was very woke and a huge hit.

Every company chasing the woke trend wants to be the next Black Panther, but more often than not they fail.
Black Panther appealed to a demographic that watches movies and buys products. That's why it was a box office hit.

It’s usually because the woke angle is a mask for poor quality products. The woke elements probably don’t sink them, the actual product does. Good products don’t need completely unrelated social trends to sell themselves.

Off the top of my head:
New Star Wars Movie Trilogy
BioWare as a game dev
EA Battlefield series
Terminator Franchise
Modern Marvel Comics

All cases of companies using woke as a shield for inferior products and failing.

It’s the modern “roll left and die.” It cuts both ways, the company can also blame the politics rather than their products for failure. It’s a really solid defense for your job if you’re shit at it.

Get woke go broke is not about diversity being bad. Get woke go broke is about diversity being the ONLY focus of a product being bad.

Example:
People don't say Star Wars "went woke/got broke" because it has a black man and wimmen in it. The problem with it is that that artificial diversity became such a marketing point that it was detrimental to literally every other aspect of the films, taking priority over quality control and writing; To the point that you had actors literally telling people that this movie was not for them and they shouldn't go see it. And when something has nothing to stand on but ideology, well... It's just not going to appeal to anyone outside of devotees to that ideology.

I think that's part of it, but I think the woke shit may have a causal relationship with shit final products. If you look at someone like Manveer Heir, he had no problem pissing off a major portion of potential customers for political reasons, so it's not really that much of a stretch to assume he wouldn't also be willing to make the work environment toxic as fuck for political reasons. Obviously it's hard to be creative if you just want to an hero by the end of every workday.

Proctor and Gamble owners of Gilette who made that god awful "Men Suck and Do Better" video followed up by "My Trans Daughter shaves too!" video.

Both shaved BILLIONS off P&G's balance sheet and had some spokesdude out of NZ (in order to bury the lead) say "This was the wrong track to align our customers needs and base" because every middle American man AND woman said "No, fuck that I'm not buying Gillette AND not buying other stuff by P&G". Gillette's woke stance to talk about politics and feelings instead of...fucking selling razors to people caused an uptick in competitors brands who kept on point with the message "you are a man, we like you, you buy our product, buy more please?" Harry's, Dollar Shave Club, and other brands took off like gangbusters.

You know what videos are made by Gillette now? White army dudes getting home from war hugging their kids and the wife saying "Smooth skin honey!"

So yes, normal people don't want to see Identity Politics, Social Justice Liberalism, and Fringe Progressive messages in their ads for shit they shave their body with.

The "go woke, go broke" isn't a new phenomenon.

Remember the 2000s with going edgy? Many beloved franchises went dark with mediocre success.

Shadow the Hedgehog, Bomberman: Act Zero, the emo phase, etc.

Now it's just shifted left. It's trying to cater to a short term demographic that is only in it for the phase.

I think it didn't fall into the WOKE basket mainly because it's about a negroid super hero from a advanced civilization. Basically like DC's gorilla grodd and the advanced gorilla society

Even the Xbox 360's original interface had windows they called "blades". Literally edgy.

🤣 They're wasting more money to protect their brand by building up the likes and positive comments with bots. 🤣

No. 99% of corporations support woke shit and only the most tactless ones (like Gillette...and Gillette didn't exactly go out of business did they) are hurt by it.

"Wokeness" as a cultural trend was pushed by elites in the first place, so of course they'll market to the status quo they themselves built. Virtually every ad has an interracial couple these days, and for the ones who don't make those ads, they put their money where their mouth is with what the CEOs donate to and what their internal HR policies are.

Ask a Palestinian how well boycotts work to change the status quo when the entire establishment is against you.

I think a bit of it is both the stigma that the end product is most likely going to turn out garbage, and the fact that the audience they pander to doesn't eat those up. The woke types I see on Twitter are more likely to play something like the latest Nintendo game than Mass Effect: Andromeda. They won't buy what caters exactly to them, they'll buy another mass produced safe video game. The "SJWs don't buy anything" theory is a myth, it's more like stuff that blatantly targets them doesn't sell.

Compare that to Black Panther. It was a success because it was a movie made for African Americans by African Americans. It was a smash hit worldwide as you'd expect from a MCU film but it did really fucking well in Africa itself as well because of the themes of the movie. They were on key with what their audience will buy and reaped the rewards.
