A good number of the Pacific Nations have better relations with New Zealand than they do us Aussies, so the analogy isn't too wrong. New Zealand stood up for itself with regards to voicing its people's objection to US nuclear politics, so that puts them well above Canada.
Australia isn't fat enough to be anyone's America.

It's a pretty apt comparison when you think about it. Identity revolves mainly around constantly comparing themselves to their neighbours? Check. Smugly act like they're better than everyone else? Check. Utterly irrelevant on the international stage? Check.

If we're continuing with the NZ = Canada analogy, sure, but it doesn't really work as well. There is no regional equivalent to Mexico, Brazil, etc.
A good number of those Pacific States used to come together at a regional forum, where they would act as a single political body, but right now it's contentious as the current leader of that forum is a rather controversial choice amongst them and some have threatened to just up and leave it.
There's similarities between our relationship with the rest of the Pacific and that of the US, but there's also a considerable number of differences that makes it difficult to say it's exactly analogous to The States and Canada.
New Zealand has way to less land to even consider that. It's like Japan as China.
