As many both here and real life know, I’m insane.

I find that they hand out degrees to people who have no fucking business dealing with sick individuals sych as myself.
For example, I know a girl who has a bachelor’s in counseling, but chooses to live in a group home now with her megaobese wife, plays with dolls, says “sex is yucky ewww” and generally acts about five.
Yet she insists on being a volunteer at suicide hotlines and pretending she has an online practice.
I have tried to do something about it but she continues to cause harm.

When I was a wee little racist fatass my family therapy sessions were usually abusive because the bulldyke misandrist therapist absolutely shit on me and my brother and took my mother’s and sisters side everytime.

Honestly therapy only works if you have chemistry with the person doing it, otherwise it’s just someone trying to force their opinions on you.

You’re not cut out for this shit if you quit the practice over somebody like myself explaining in full detail the 25 years of white flight and degentrification I witnessed and why that’s why I will never not be racist.

Yeah, pretty much. Talk therapy isn't scientific at all and the DSM/ICD is applied statistics/pure correlation. Not only are mechanisms of actions for mental health diagnosis unknown, many popular prescribed medications have completely unknown mechanisms of action (eg. Lithium).

Psychiatry just helps with people that have impulses that cannot be controlled (because meds). Of course there is a lot of bad practises and patients not telling their own family they are self-medicating in really stressful situations.

Psychology, I feel it can work for some people in a self-doubt phase in some situations (abusive relationships, mostly) in order to reassure yourself. I had to go a couple of times because family issues but I ended up resolving the situation in my own terms, so it didn't work for me. I

Worked for me. When all the middle-aged women forced doctors to give them Adderall, a law was passed in my state to counter the abuse and made it much harder to obtain it. Jacked up the street price of it. Sold like $20 a pill of my prescribed leftovers to sorority chicks during midterms and finals week. Helped get me through college.

Psychiatry paid for my groceries.

Getting a good understanding on how the mind works is probably right behind the hard sciences in terms of shit we need to do to stop being such monkeys about everything. It's not going to help crazy people, but it will help other people wrangle crazy people somewhat more easily.

OTOH electro-shock therapy.

It's the best we can do and it's just not that good. I get a kick out of people telling me how dangerous it is to diagnose Ali Rapp with BPD over an internet forum.

Both psychiatry (mostly meds) and psychology (mostly talk therapy) are hit or miss. It depends a lot on the quality of the therapist, the patient's metabolism, and their willingness to get better.

I can say that therapy definitely helped me. Meds, not so much. SSRIs give you sexual side effects (you can't cum), and TCAs and buproprion(Wellbutrin) made me so lightheaded I couldn't walk.

Psychiatry is far from perfect, but if I had to choose between living in a cage until the devil leaves my body or taking antipsychotic drugs, I'd pick the latter.

Mental healthcare has a bad rep because its infamous misteps (electroshock therapy, lobotomies, cocaine) are recent and gruesome enough to survive in our collective consciousness. Truth is that medicine as a whole isn't as reliable as we'd wish it to be. Ever heard that statistic about how hospital themselves are a leading cause of death?

Electroshock therapy is still a thing. Fwiw.
