I always thought it was a euphemism for masturbation.
It's actually a shorter way of saying laying on the couch eating a gallon of ice-cream by yourself and staring at the television most of the time.
If I recall, the ORIGINAL meaning of self-care had some basis in treating things like severe depression or any of the various mood disorders that would cause you to harm or neglect yourself to a noticeable level. It was mostly used for things like getting you to bathe/clean up for the first time in like a week, distract yourself from cutting, real shit like that.
...of course now that everyone self-diagnoses themselves with a bad case of spoiled twat syndrome and uses the term as an excuse to act like a toddler, the term is basically useless.

This. Self Care is meant to be practiced in tandem with medical care; in this case, from your mental health professional. It means doing things for yourself to ensure you're being proactive towards your own health and well being in a physical and emotional sense. Making appointments, taking a gottdang shower, staying regular with medication, eating and sleeping enough? Relevant and necessary self care that nobody's going to do for you. It's about building momentum and not wallowing in your own feels and filth.
"Self Care" in the uwu corners of the webzone basically means reading fanfic fluff with your OTPs in a sparkle vomit Lush bath while your tumblr mutuals validate your 400 kintypes.
