Whenever someone who committed a more "immoral" crime (e.g pedophilia) gets imprisoned, everyone jokes and says "LOL I BET HE'LL HAVE FUN WHEN TYRONE AND BUBBAH GET A HOLD OF HIM." I don't know if there's any truth to this, though, and it got me thinking; do the really bad people "get theirs" in prison? Or are they treated the same as any other inmate?

A quick search brings up several stories of paedophiles and other sex offenders being beaten/strangled to death. I find it ironic that violent criminals in prison feel the need to be judge and executioner to pedophiles. People, even the violent criminals themselves, like to believe what they do is out of moral righteousness. It's called Protective Custody. People from targeted groups like transsexuals, pedophiles, ex-cops, known snitches, rapists, gang-traitors and others are separated from the general prison population.

It's very interesting, even the Black and Hispanic gangs of Chicago had an honor code. If you killed somebody who wasn't playing "the game" people would call you out for going too far and you would be expected to hand yourself in. British gangs used to avoid carrying guns to glorify the idea that crime harmless game about wits. Criminals seem to have the need to convince themselves that they're not the worst of the worst. For whatever reason, gangs like MS-13 do not have this at all. Considering that pedos are the worst of the worst it makes sense they'd be a target. Not being the worst of the worst is pretty important to these people.

Most prisoners convicted of sex crimes or anything else which would get them canned on the daily (ex cops, snitches etc) "take the numbers" - ie. opt for segregation. It's dealt with differently in other countries, but in the UK it's Rule 63 (oi finks) and it means they are segregated from general population.

There's usually similar in force even in US prisons because they really do cause serious aggro. The pecking order inside is incredibly hierarchical and those at the bottom not only get a pasting, but are held in such contempt that it can affect prison security. They don't want to be beaten to a pulp daily and the authorities don't need the disquiet when others don't want to be housed with them. And sentimentality is rife in prisons, they're stupid about their wives and kiddiwinks (even if reality is they can't even name them) so that it becomes a matter of honour.

Some will choose general population (some have no choice, the Governor may specify they have to seg) and they will often end up the bitch of a higher-ranking inmate. It gives them a degree of safety inasmuch as Bill the Bank Robber is ploughing them to a pulp but nobody else will touch his property.

It's no easy ride tho. Sometimes the only option is total segregation which is no soft option, and it almost becomes a game for other inmates to get them. And tbh, the guards are not too bothered as long as it doesn't get out of hand. For instance, a child-killer here was napalmed (boiling water and sugar thrown in the face) within a couple of weeks of sentencing despite precautions due to the high-profile of the case. And even seg units have a hierarchy, so those exiled from GP will still have a pecking order, with chomos at the bottom. What happens inside stays inside - prison culture is fascinating, but utterly closed to outsiders.

I know of a case with a bit of "local" connection: Criminal A (who lived in the vicinity of one of my uncles at the time of his crimes), who was in prison for manipulating his mistress into killing his wife, tried to make a name for himself in prison by making the other criminals gang up on Criminal B, who had been convicted of raping and killing a woman and a young girl.

In the UK, sex offenders are kept in separate wings and don't mix with general population. That doesn't stop them from getting beaten/murdered, though. I'm sure plenty of guards "accidentally" let them mingle.

I've heard of prison gangs telling potential members some random guy (or a suspected rat) is a pedophile and to kill him to prove loyalty, or dirty guards saying the same thing to take out troublesome prisoners.
