It was around the time when the new Star Wars movie was getting loads of amounts of criticism, I managed to save this image from a user online who posted a meme to a “fan” of SW. The person in question complained that people who did not see the new movie shouldn’t have the right to criticize the movie, and he said something along the lines of “You’re just adding to the hate, giving all these anti-SJW’s more firepower!”
(Keep in mind, the person he was interacting with was just giving the film constructive criticism.)

With that said, does this meme seem to define what to expect in the 2020’s?
Will this continue to happen globally, or is this just an American thing?

Consumerism isn't new as the iconic supreme logo once said "I think there for I Shop" I think it's just fandoms have become more prevalent as normies started to become the target audience of most websites along with the proliferation of social media.

In the past the consoomer was more or less derided for his vapid mind and flighty fixations. In the way back there were just books to read, then there were movies and TV to watch, now there's more media produced at a high production value than you could possibly consume. And now, nearly everything is political, including your "identity" and political topics range from toxic to dangerous, there aren't that many safe ways to interact with people other than by consuming vapid media and talking about it. Why structure your public personality around your deeply held faith? Love of fishing? Cis-het-normal relationship pair bonding? These things are problematic.

Better to identify as a starwars fan than a white person. Large corporations, non profits and swathes of people will validate and affirm the goodness of the HBOmax subscriber, no one gives a shit about your metal working, god, canned goods charity drive or archery hobby. Even if some people did find it interesting it would only be in passing and to discuss it would risk ridicule, or worse, conflict. Safer just to mention your thoughts on The Mandalorian in a tweet or until coffee break is over.

I guess it's sort of just a rehash of the Small Souled Bugman, about whom much was written 3ish years ago. The Consoomer is just how the Bugman comes across online.

Of course I speak with people face to face, Maybe it's the city I live in, the industry I'm a part of or the company I've kept but in my experience this is how people are these days. Their identity became defined by the brands and types of things they purchased (late 80sish) AND identity became political (mid 2000s) all that remained for people who wanted to fit in or move up was to tie themselves to whatever was popular.

People have been criticizing consumerism for ages, it’s just that in the past, that criticism would have been directed at prime time TV and action movies and pop music. Now it’s Star Wars and Marvel and video games and social media.

The criticism never changes and the target never changes, the only thing that does is pop culture. Criticizing consumerism is essentially just criticizing people who are heavily invested in pop culture.

They're just so repulsive and lifeless, stripped of all charm that its source character had, with only some clothing and hair details to differentiate them. I always figured they were designed that way to both be easy to churn out countless numbers of them, and so the actor's likeness never has to be licensed - so with a Funko Pop of Daryl from The Walking Dead, they don't have to give Norman Reedus jack. They just kind of came from nowhere and spawned a whole new market of bullshit collectibles, with the ones you'll most commonly see in stores from whatever new Marvel movie's out and whatever adult-oriented TV show is hot right now.

And people fuckin' buy these. I don't get it. They make every single character look like an insect, but I guess the urge to consoom consoom consoom whatever franchise put a bit o' meth in your soy milk this morning makes everything from actual quality to appeal worthless. Didja grow up loving Shrek? Well why not add this horrifying depiction of Donkey to your shelf, to gaze at you forevermore:

It's like the soullessness of modern pop culture is now on full display, practically mocking itself for how milquetoast and unoriginal everything's become. There's not a single bit of creativity in a Funko Pop. They're gauche and inoffensive. A child could draw a mockup for a future Funko Pop of any franchise, and probably nail what it'll look like.

What pisses me off about Funko Pops is that they generated this awful wave of collectible toy products. Collectibles have always been a thing, but now it's consumed (no pun intended) everything. My local Barnes and Noble used to have this awesome DVD and vinyl section. I found so many cool movies and records there. Then at some point they junked that whole section and replaced it with fucking horrible consoomer toy collectables while the DVD and vinyl are squished into this tiny section.

I place the blame squarely on Funko Pops because they were the first to really latch onto the mainstream and now every comic, gaming, and book shop is cluttered with this shit while the actual products like books, DVDs, and games are pushed aside.
