Its a less than 2-hour drive, as a matter of fact. Since he seems to hold so much nostalgia for the city of Richmond, how come he hasn't bothered driving to see it in recent years? Even before Barb started forcing him to stay home, he ventured away a few times (Went to Ohio to see Julie, went on a hike near a mountain, went to PVCC which is south past Charlottesville).

When moping about High school, he seems to hold a lot of regret for not keeping better contact with his gal pals, if Ruckersville was actually within driving distance, why did he not care to drive? It's not like he wasn't able to - all graduates should know how to drive a car.

In recent pictures, it seems as though the chandlers have gotten rid of most of the junk cars. They just have the Dodge van, Chris' Cadillac, and Bob's BMW.

My guess is that what Chris misses is not the physical place itself but his high school experience. He misses being in an environment in which literally nothing is expected of him other than not engaging in some kind of extreme misbehavior. Going to the location of the high school without also receiving the treatment he got while he was enrolled there would be futile for him.
