My only criticism of SEED is that I've never had a show hold my hand so much just so that I would understand how the show worked. Other than that, it just felt extremely generic 5/10 to me.

Also, Gundam X is an underrated classic.

iirc Gun Damn popped up in the ancient dub of the original Trilogy.

Regarding a USA version of Build Fighters in general I've seen speculation based around the idea that the USA has some restrictions about specifically showing them playing with the toys in the cartoon, so it's not as cost-effective to do a dub for what would end up youtube-only with no chance of hitting its target audience via TV.

It's not that. The problem isn't them playing with toys, otherwise we'd never have gotten YuGiOh. The problem is that they're not allowed to directly promote the toys in the show itself, otherwise the entire episode would be considered one long ad meant to prey upon children and whoever aired it would end up fined by the FCC. The thing that would set them off would be the real-world accurate Gunpla boxes. Little Battlers Xperience has the same premise and it had to edit all the boxes out for broadcast, only difference is they were taking a 40-some episode series and cutting it into 20-some. GBF does not have as much material to cut.

So, now that IBO's close to completion, how's it looking on the hall? I watched the first five eps like a year back and dug it, but never got around to catcing up. Thinking of watching it through when it finishes up.

Saw Narrative through a fandango event. Pretty good, added to the newtype mythos, but I felt it didn't pick up until the college colony.

Also felt the animation was weaker than the original Unicorn ovas at times (what happened to Martha's face?)

Yeah the animation was surprisingly weak, especially the character animation.

Nice. Anyone with the GP02A has excellent tastes.

I have built so many models they go through rotation so my house doesn't look like mecha autism central.

Built the Narrative A-pack high grade and that thing is massive.
Fuck, I hope I get to do rotations some day. I want to build my collection since gunpla is my stress reliever and I've always loved Gundam since I was a wee lad. The GPO2A was my favorite build and my favorite to pose.
I've been looking up how to make docking bays. Just need silver metal color spray paint, a bunch of VHS tapes. Knife, And random little things to make balcony walkways then just get miniature barrels, cranes, ammunition station, and tools.
Also been looking to get some battle cruisers/Flag Ship, mainly Chars from CCA

Ok through Toonami Aftermath I've been watching old gundam shows. Because the site is meant to replicate a traditional TV channel, I have and probably will miss a lot of episodes though I do plan on doing full watchthroughs of the series some day. So far I've seen the last episode of G Gundam, the first few episodes of Wing, and some of Zeta and 0083

My thoughts

Zeta Gundam: I've started about midway tbhrough the series so I'm a bit lost. I'm still enjoying it though.

Gundam Wing: I'm enjoying mainly because every character is a fucking autistic psychopath

0083: Really enjoying this one. I especially love the ending theme

I actually when and saw that last night.
It was the first time in a while since I've seen CCA and I forgot how solid that film is.
Like, it's got Tomino's first actual film director foibles and Quess and Hathaway's arc can bring the film down, but man everything else is done so well. Animation, music, Amuro and Char being complex bastards. Mmm, good shit.

Started rewatching all the Gundam shows this year because it was the 40th anniversary and I hadn't seen them in years. Thoughts so far:

0079 - Good lord this is even better than I remember. It's got all the hallmarks of the best of Tomino like Dunbine and especially Ideon. Drags a bit at times but the last arc is utterly fantastic

0080 War in the Pocket - I wish they experimented a little more with Gundam like this. I thought Alfred was a bit obnoxious and autistic even though he is just a kid, but it's a well-written tragedy. And the few fight scenes are perfectly placed and beautifully animated

08th MS Team - Pacing can be a bit slow at times but it's a great love story. Nice fight seens as always.

0083 Stardust Memory - Best Gundam OVA because of wonderful mecha designs, the beautiful fight scenes, and the great villains. It's like a 50 episode show in miniature. Perfect prelude to Zeta Gundam.

Zeta - Still watching this one and already I'm impressed. Much better pacing than 0079. There's a lot of nuance I missed the first time through since I didn't know my UC lore at the time. The Titans are fantastic villains and the mecha design rules (especially those cockpits!). This is where Quattro/Char really shines as a character and seeing all the 0079 characters again is great. Makes me sad that behind the scenes shit meant Sayla doesn't really show up here (or in ZZ/CCA).

Looking forward to rewatching shit like Turn A and G Gundam to see how well they hold up. Or SEED since I watched it before a lot of the others and can't wait to see how much they borrowed. Not looking forward to SEED Destiny or AGE (especially the latter, fuck that show).

A while back a buddy of mine decided to watch all the UC shows. I watched a lot of them with him. Going roughly down the timeline...

  • The Origin: great, high quality films that give some needed backstory to Char and his situation. I loved most of these. It was fun seeing fan favorites like Ramba Ral depicted with a little more nuance than in...
  • Mobile Suit Gundam: A classic, no doubt, though undeniably clunky. Intriguing ideas and storyline concepts, handled awkwardly (I can't decide how much of that is due to a Japanese sensibility, though.) I thoroughly enjoyed watching it with a friend and laughing at what didn't work.
  • War in the Pocket: from a plot/writing standpoint, this is one of the best UC shows/miniseries IMO. It did a great job of depicting the grey aspects of war and how it impacts everyone involved.
  • 08th Team: one of my favorites, due due the 90s art style and the emphasis on GM combat.
  • IGLOO: worth watching but pretty cringeworthy. I love the concept, focusing on weapons that didn't get developed in time to impact the war. But it has terrible CGI, and it suffers from the questionable logic these "untold stories" sandwiched into the timeline often have.
  • Thunderbolt: bar none my favorite UC animation of the ones I've seen. The soundtrack is amazing, the animation is fantastic, the direction is impeccable, and the writing is superb. I love the moral grey area of having the "protagonist" be Zeon and the "antagonist" be Federation. (But yes, again, it's silly that we never heard about these machines later.)
  • Stardust Memory: Apparently I watched this but can't remember much about it! I do remember liking the animation/art style.
  • Zeta Gundam: my personal favorite of the longform UC series. It feels like everyone involved has a better grip on storytelling essentials, and the animation/art style is more personally appealing. I liked the integration of older MSG characters into this storyline, too. Good stuff.
  • MSG ZZ: I got through all of this but, despite loving the art style, didn't like it as much as Zeta. The characters are a lot less likable or interesting. (Shout out to Bright for being a delightful lynchpin character of all three mainline series so far, though.)
That's basically where I stopped. I haven't seen Char's Counterattack yet. I'm looking forward to seeing Hathaway first based on that trailer above, though.

I like the UC timeline. Everything feels more grounded and believable than the other Gundam timelines, and that's important when the coolness of the machines themselves are what keep you watching through stilted, inept storytelling.
