It's somewhat depressing that the Farms is one of the few places you can have a coherent conversation without risk of censorship -

I'm not counting the chans, a coherent conversation there is pretty much impossible with the rampant autism and personality disorders on display.
1.- Kiwifarms already has those
2.- stop going to populated imageboards amd go to more obscure ones
3.-it is indeed depressing

The loss of small independent forums like KF is the worst thing to ever happen to online discussion. Those days in the past were legitimately better.
I couldn't agree more. The 'net of forums, the Blogosphere and personal websites was dare I say more social than the so called social media of today.

We used to have an internet of people, amateurish and soulful. Sure it was inefficient, but over the years I have learned to realize that imperfection is where people can express themselves. It really felt like people were building out their own space on the internet, instead of just being serfs on one of the mega-platforms that won the post dot-com bubble competition.

I just miss the 90s-early web 2.0 internet.

I find that it's mostly a game of finding watering holes that attracts a certain type of people. I don't think it's a better place (except when compared to reddit maybe, but that is a low bar), I don't think it's better people either, I think it's more the right niche of people of being likeminded in some respects.

It's just the right amount of diversity (which is to say: not much, but enough for some spice).
What other websites offer this freedom of expression?

To be honest, i do prefer to browse Farms vs posting. When i do post it's to dig in to something intellectual that i don't understand, but would like to. It must have been ace back in the day to browse through posts made by university graduates, without all of the fluff and crap of todays uni grads

The quality of university graduates is decreasing anyways with affirmative action and all the other nonsense.

There is a reason there was the proof of mathematical solution found anonymously on a messageboard that hadn't been made before; it's because a lot of talent does spend time there.

I knew what the answer was going to be, but it was worth an ask.

Indeed. Uni grads from the 80's/90's had to take real courses. uni grads today take courses in pillow-fluffing and white-hating. Pretty much attendance courses.

I have a tinfoil theory that the internet is designed to comb as many brains as possible to find answers and solutions to problems that TPTB face. Like the meme of "the right is always right in the end" is because out there, in the millions of shit posts, somebody posts a truly genius idea.

Like what problems?

I mean program lockstep from 2010 seems to have solved most of their immediate problems and that was just some rockefeller think tank.

Any and all things social, maybe a few scientific/mathematical problems, maybe ideas for inventions.

The same way Bill Gates created windows and how Amazon stole the Kindle idea.
He he yeah, "created" windows. But that was before internet so it obviously isn't a necessity.

The forum format is good for this, i remember being on several themed forums in the early 00s and the general discussion usually was civil and interesting in most of them but classic forum format have been largely replaced by reddit subs . The rest of social media and plebbit with the karma and upvote system doesn't lend itself to discussions and you are right chans have become unusable, too much of a low bar for posters, the incentive is to straw man and shitpost, also very easy to spam, bait and sockpuppet as well as to flood with bots. An anonymous forum with sensible moderators where you still have an account and a track record is a good middle ground between freedom of speech and a cesspool like 4 chan.

I'm a mong who believes some mongy stuff, but just for the laughs, here's some mongspeil

Billy G, Stevey J and Stevey Woz, among others, were contacted by the American Govt/Military to create the next 'phase' in home computing. They say a promise of DARPAnet rolled out to the masses. While the Steve, Steve and co got to work writing code for an OS, Billy G, the sneaky little sneaker, decided to write code to 'spy' (in whatever form that may have taken) on his friends. He took all of their hard work, added a little bit of his own and voila, Windows.

Jobs and Woz wrote code and created computers, Apple OS's (in varying forms) etc. Billy G on the other hand hasn't released a working OS since '98 but is a dab hand at writing espionage software. From international ops of putting code on HDD that were sold to Iran et al, to creating back doors in to everything the NSA wanted. Kinect was going to be his ultimate spy device, except Obama screwed the pooch by spying on Merkel with a Kinect (allegedly)

Taking all of that mongness and placing it over todays internet; It's not only plausible, but entirely possible, that the current/next species defining advancements will come from an internet user. Not only that, but the amount of information given away on forums is unbelievable.

I disagree with this point of view completely. Mainstream platforms being censored all to hell is absolutely nothing new, people are just noticing it more now that the mainstream culture has turned against them so much.

When I was growing up, it was readily apparent to me that if you wanted somewhere to talk without your behavior being policed, you had to find a group or website run by one person or a very small group of people. Both IRL and on the internet. Any time that group would grow too large or the website would turn into something of a franchise, there would be a set of expectations placed on your behavior with censorship following shortly behind.

I've lived my entire life like this, bouncing from one small group to the next, staying as long as I can until the platform gets bought out or simply ceases to function due to its age. I even made most of my RL friends based on this principle; they stuck by me because they knew I'd let them speak their minds and be willing to engage with them. Things are no different today, and I consider Kiwi Farms just the latest in a long line of obscure places clinging in between the cracks.

I've always had a hostile set of opinions, and my behavior hasn't had to change a damn bit in the last ten years to adapt to the current political climate. But here I am surrounded by a whole world of annoying hipsters who seem to think the world is closing in on them just because they can't say nigger on Facebook or Twitter; websites they shouldn't fucking be using in the first place anyway. The world was always like this, get with the program.

I get what you're saying, as MSN chat rooms (as an example) were banned and shuttered off, fan websites were bought out by big corpos who changed the language, but it has never been this bad/blatant, at all.

I remember Jolly Roger's cook book (renamed anarchists cook book) being banned when i first got on the net, Mortal Kombat and GTA were under fire for their violence and Metal/Rap was under-fire for their lyrics.

The difference is between all of that and what we see today is the lack of point or reasoning. Sure, ban MSN chatrooms that could be harbouring pedophiles, i don't agree but i understand. Same goes with MK and GTA, they ARE violent and Metal/Rap lyrics CAN sound violent. But nowadays? Asking a question about a few people walking around a building in another country (im in the UK) get's me banned or vilified, for what? Asking questions about the vaccine or saying i want to wait isn't sensible, it's nasty evil nazi shit.

You aren't the only one with hostile opinions, and i have jumped around to find people that i can have an open conversation with. Nowadays that doesn't exist. My friends have turned, my old romances have become zombies and almost all the people i meet are either too far gone or too scared to speak up.

While censorship in some form, or a push for and against the status quo has and always will exist, it has never - in my short years on this planet, being as bad/rampant/blatant as it is now.

FWIW the farms is the only place i come and if it wasn't for this shitposting laugh, i would have removed the internet entirely from my life.
