Jaclyn Hill, a 26 year old woman from Tampa, Florida, started her YouTube makeup channel in 2011, and posted her first video, a video about how to do your makeup so you look like a Christmas Kardashian, later that same year.
Prior to that, her only experience as a makeup artist was from being a sales person at MAC, but as far as anyone knows, she has never actually been trained or certified as a makeup artist. That doesn't keep her from referring to herself as Jaclyn Hill, Professional Makeup Artist pretty much everywhere on the internet where she has a presence.
People liked Jaclyn because in addition to creating makeup looks they enjoyed, she also had a quirky personality. She was entertaining as well as informative, which resulted in her gaining a lot of subscribers. Eventually makeup companies began to notice how popular Jaclyn was, and she started doing collaborations with companies like Morphe and Becca. However, these collaborations, while financially lucrative for Hill, have caused a lot of people to feel like they can't believe her when she reviews products, because she shills for Morphe and Becca in order to be paid.
The Becca collaboration, in particular, has lead to probably Jaclyn's biggest public embarrassment, when, after she reviewed and attested to the quality of a palette put out in her name, it ended up being recalled because it was so poor in quality. Becca also made Jaclyn look like a liar, when one of the so-called limited edition highlighters from the collaboration was re-released later as a stand-alone product. She had earlier told her fans that the highlighter was limited edition and would never be re-released.
Jaclyn is very sensitive to criticism, and has been known to delete videos if people don't respond to them favorably, and she has made many, many social media posts about "the haters". Jaclyn is so sensitive that many people question her decision to stay in the limelight, considering how much she lets other people's opinions affect her. Of course, the obvious answer to that question is money. She has over 4 million subscribers and her videos get millions of views, so she's pulling in hundreds of thousands of dollars from Youtube alone. If you factor in paid shillery, she's pretty well compensated for not actually being Jaclyn Hill, Professional Makeup Artist.
