So Japan has had a law since 2008 that enforces a waist line of 35 inches or less and makes those above go to counselling and a dietitian.

Personally I like this idea but it would absolutely fail to gain traction in most Western places due to the sheer amount of overweight and obese people and HAES BS. In the US alone that is roughly 68.7% of the population according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. If western countries had stemmed obesity issues with a similar program in the 80s then the cost of health care as a whole would be much lower, socialized or not.

Here we seem to be about telling kids what to eat, instead of honestly telling people who are overweight that they are fucking themselves up and rehabing the behavior at no cost to those who honestly need it addressed.

Just found it interesting that this is so much more functional than any Western system and has seen an actual result in fixing the issue over telling kids to "eat your veggies".

There's an easy way to deal with obesity even in a social democracy with universal health care: you split the obese population under the pretext of providing special care for them and then keep their services deliberately underfunded.

Japan already has a lower obesity rate to begin with, on the other hand, they're a very old and conservative country, so they know how to keep the people as a whole safer. (except for Hiroshima). Time and time again, people have proven they cannot control themselves when gaining weight and it has proven to be a burden across the world. Obesity should not go on your criminal record, but discouraging it through a night in jail might not be such a bad idea.

How would you even begin to monitor that? At regular physicals or examinations for other things? Would you make it a "duty to report" situation like gunshot wounds? I think it's an interesting idea in theory, but making obesity a punishable offense would just make sure that people didn't seek medical treatment until it was an emergency. (in this country at least.)

Japan's work places generally mandate a once a year doctor check up for insurance reasons. That's when they measure people.

That definitely wouldn't work here. My (admittedly limited) understanding is that you can't require employees to submit to medical exams unless it's a demonstrable necessity for the job. (like if the public safety is at risk if you suddenly keel over from a heart attack. Pilots, for example.)

Should just let the fatties eat themselves to death. And then normal people can step in and fix what's wrong unopposed. America is too far gone to try and fix their obesity problem without a COMPLETE overhaul of the food industry. The food and agriculture industry is built entirely around cheap and empty calories and fat. You'd have to undo some 60 years of industry to fix that. And you're not going to do that when over half the populace is dependant and supportive of how it is run.

So again. Let the sweaty fat fucks eat what they want, they'll kill themselves off quickly enough. Those of us who can control ourselves and stay reasonably healthy in such an environment that encourages overeating and waste will be able to step up to solve the problems once we are no longer the minority.

This is true but I've worked places where it was mandatory to, for instance, get flu shots. I am pretty sure this isn't legal but why would I kick up a fuss about it? I do this anyway and it was free. It was run by a Jewish family and seriously working there was like having a Jewish mother.

As much as I hated me a fatty before it was cool. I feel this is a step too far, Now Japan has a much more socialized medicine system , so in morals it's differnt while I feel socialized medicine is wrong in a system where it's in place I think this is less "wrong". Political rant over /

There's a good deal of people who have issues with any addiction, from things in their life or be pre wired (for example the alcholic gene concept) the issue with food, in fatties defense, unlike whiskey crack or black jack, you need to eat. The same can be said for those who eat too little. You'll have to deal with this addiction in a different way than someone who can give it up. You may always want crack but can live with out it, you can't go not eating.

The insane costs that the super obese morbid cost is absurd, we as all societies let a junkie lay in an alley and put a needle in his arm if he's sober enough to stumble into a welfare office maybe he gets that. That's all they charge us, if someone wants to pack on 400 lbs we end up paying for their rehab etc. Now personally I think we should focus more on preventing.

The whole idea of kids menus blows my mind. You get what you get and eat it or be hungry. Exposing people to healthy foods early is important I think. You build that early into people you skip a majority of people who don't care and have mild obesity and even some who use "rush" foods to cope with issues.

If you choose to be fat, then you should deal with it not the rest of the tax payers. Those who ballon in size same addiction treatment as anyone else.

Hospitals are like that in some places in the US - if you work there, you need to get shots for the patients' protection even if you aren't actually working with them. I'm guessing it's part of the contract for working there or something, but I do wonder if they'd give exemptions to those who have legitimate medical reasons for being unable to take a vaccine.

Come to think of it, I only saw one fat guy during my stay there. In Germany I would've seen at least ten in the same timespan.
