The gist of it: Netflix just launched a trailer for their new film, The Outsider, the basic plot seems to revolve around a WWII soldier who joins the Yakuza, this is the trailer:

Naturally, much REEing happened because of all the reasons you're accustomed to by now (racism, white, appropriation..etc), you will note that a lot of those tweets have a slightly different look, and that's because Twitter is nice enough to do our jobs for us and collect it all in one place called moments:

Pretty much that.
Yakuza are outsiders of the regular japanese society and they are involved in a lot of shady deals that often include dealing with people from Asia (human trafficking, prostitution, drug and firearms smuggling, you get the idea), so it's only natural that they are very open towards foreigners.
It's very easy to end up within such a power structure, it might be sufficient to work at a bar in -say- a shady part of Tokyo.

The Yakuza are what soaks up all the drop-outs from society, it's the logical conclusion that they end up with some white folk, too.

Whelp, the queen of movies has spoken, if a movie doesn't appeal to this person and this person specifically, it has no reason to exist, I guess.

This is interesting. I didn't know this. I'm surprised that none of these salty hags are bringing up the rumors that he's a disgusting perv that has had rough sex with underage girls. I can't stand him and he rubs me the wrong way. Jordan Catalano was just a wannabe Dylan McKay.

But it's not like this film is an affront to humanity Especially if it does indeed have a basis in reality. It's going to have tons of Asians in it anyway. They should be glad to see that. But shouldn't they also be REEEEing about the stereotypical portrayal of Asians? Because they always complain about them getting roles as criminals, martial artists and sidekicks.

This editorial on junkee.com tries to pretend to be balanced and impartial by listing a lot of the salt I have posted already, then posts some reasonable rebuttals (those exist too), but the author (Tom Clift) can't resist adding his salty opinion:

Which was actually received pretty well in Japan, to the point it had a theatrical re-release there a couple years ago.

The only way anyone in Japan is going to give a shit about this is if they cast Chinese or Korean actors to play Japanese people. Yakuza films are pure pulp and you're not going to be getting much critical analysis of it even from people inclined to do that sort of thing for movies.

Ethnic Koreans make up around .5% of Japan's population but are something like 10% of Yakuza rank-and-file. A huge chunk of the remainder are descendants of "untouchable" castes that were still discriminated against a lot until recently.

In defense of the films this checkmark speaks of: Dr. Strange changed a character to appease China for that sweet Yuan, Ghost in the Shell uses a government robot to house the brain of a kidnapped Asian, The Last Samurai title actually refers to a group of Samurai Tom Cruise's character fights alongside, and Great Wall was Matt Damon's character learning to actually fight for something that isn't money while letting his Chinese co-star kill the alien's attacking the Great Wall.
