So unless my math is wrong, that means they make less than $25,680/year. I don't know how they expect to move anywhere if they need subsidized rent to afford an apartment. Plus, imagine what they must spend to keep Jen fat and happy. There's very little after the grocery hauls, takeout, yarn and other junk, for them to even put into savings.

hardly. since she's basically on welfare disability (SSI), the max a person can be awarded a month is $794. Times 12 months equals $9,528 annual income. So in that case she would be paying $238 a month for rent (30% of income). So why would she be paying the flat rate of $535 instead of $238 if you pay the cheaper one? Well on on SSI you are allowed to work and make up to a certain amount of money before the SSI checks stop. She can make up to but not over $1,310 a month working. If she or vernon make over that a month, it goes into a trial work period, blah blah blah.

She'd have to be making at minimum $22,000 (between welfare and any other income combined) for the $535 rent to be cheaper than 30% of income rent. This means she and/or vernon would be making about a grand a month from "working".

What does Gene do? Mow lawns on the side? Bag groceries like a 16 year old?

I have a hard time believing Jen has any employment either. they probably consider their internet "career" as full time jobs.

Someone her size can't do much unless it's work from home. In which case there are legit options like call centers and medical billing. But she's too "busy" for those I imagine.

I think she's flat our lying. Gene probably gets a few dollars here and there for helping old ladies with their groceries or something like that. They feel sorry for him because he's a drunk.

Not that it will matter for long. Her “treatments” are almost certainly weight-loss based, probably due to CHF, and it sounds like she has to stay there and the car is for Gene to visit. So it’ll never happen, saving for the car is an excuse to ignore it. She might realize in that 5 minutes between the time her flabby heart stops and she’s dead that she should have taken it seriously, but probably she’ll just wish she could fit in one more donut.

Often smaller hospitals have weight limits when it comes to non-emergency patients due to both the expense of bariatric equipment and the extra staff needed to deal with deathfats when lifting/moving etc. I've seen both specific weight limits for hospitals (150kg for one orthopaedic hospital that was specifically to their operating tables specs), and BMI limits (my local hospital is set at 42 max but another the next town away is maximum of 35) which is specific to surgical risk and the level of high dependency beds and medical staff.
