As somewhat of a writer myself, can I just say that lumping your work into the "It's fun so I don't bother improving it" category is inherently self sabotaging of your own development. If anything, passion projects are meant to be where you focus on improving your writing the most, because it's actually enjoyable and motivates you to keep going?

Writing is one of the hardest things you can do, organizing your thoughts and putting them into text is extremely difficult and easy to blow off. If you have a premise and a setting you actually enjoy writing to the point of publication in the public domain, actively not trying to improve your abilities is the biggest waste of your time, and your fan's time.

Are there any others here who dabble in writing? Does this frustrate anyone else or am I crazy?
Honestly, I think people would probably be a lot less critical of the "it's just for fun" angle, and Lily's work in general, if Lily just practiced a little bit of humility once and a while. She goes on about how her comic and fan-fictions are "just for fun" and normally I'd be willing to accept that reasoning just fine, we all do dumb, fun stuff in our spare time. However, Lily talks with the ego of someone who's a best selling author, or famous screen writer, or the like, when really she doesn't have a single significant writing accomplishment to her name. I don't count her reviews or Youtube channel because, when put against all the other cartoon reviewers on the platform, she's mid-tier at best (if we're going strictly by popularity and numbers), about on the same level as TheMysteriousMrEnter. It doesn't help either when she says thinks like "I could touch up TSR to be on par with a published novel, but I just don't want to" or "If I had creative control of a cartoon, I could make a proper Steven Universe, but I'd rather make something silly and light-hearted like Teen Titans GO! or Tangled", as though making a cartoon is as easy as slapping a script together and throwing it at the animation team and telling them to get to work. Not once does she admit or even acknowledge that maybe there might be more to making a cartoon or being a showrunner then she knows with her "googled it" level knowledge, or that writing a compelling story that isn't just "lesbians being silly, dramatic, and cute" might be more difficult then she thinks.

Most decent reviewers out there, be it of literature, video games, movies, whatever, at least have the sense to recognize that making and publishing a piece of work takes a lot of effort and tend to strictly stick to the discussing the product itself and not harp too much on the people as a whole who made it because, honestly, most people know that making something like a cartoon or a video games is an incredible amount of work and they're not sure if they'd make the same mistakes if they were in there shoes. But Lily honestly seems to think that she can do better then these people despite having nothing to prove that she could, so she's either;
1. In denial, she knows she couldn't write anything decent even if she tried but is afraid her fans wouldn't take her opinion seriously if they knew that
-or-
2. Is delusional and actually thinks she's capable of being the next big thing (despite never having tried to publish a book or trying to break into any entertainment industry), but is also too lazy to bother putting any effort into trying to make anything that is lesbian drama schlock.

Sadly, we'll probably never know for sure because Lily seems adamant on not even trying to experiment with different genre's of writing, never mind one of the biggest pieces of writing advice out there is to try writing different genre's of literature. But until she does and I see atleast a short story from her that contains no romance or lesbians or lesbian romance I will call bullshit on any claims Lily makes on her writing abilities. You don't only write schlock because you find it fun and don't want to bother with anything else Lily, you write schlock because it's all you're capable of writing, just own upto it, everyone will respect you more for it in the long run.

the funny thing about it is that Lily defends her writing as "silly dumb fun" and doesn’t give a damn, but at the same time she defends all the time with paragraphs and posts as everything makes sense and is well written

you have to choose only one, because you apply very high and authoritative quality standards to everyone but yourself. Or did Lily think the mainstream writers didn't do it for fun either?
Nothing says you're totally not salty like writing a 1,000 word essay about why your critics are wrong.
reminds me of TTG who made about 6 episodes answering "haters" with zero maturity, the last saying that who disagrees with them has "poop mouths with poop opinions" and I see Lily going in that direction

But Lily honestly seems to think that she can do better then these people despite having nothing to prove that she could, so she's either;

I would say that Lily is delusional because to say that the only thing that makes her writing so abysmal is because she doesn't fuck is hilariously ignorant and naive

the reason why many of her characters become mary sues is not just a power fantasy but a product of lack of creativity and poor writing in general

when an author writes an obstacle for the protagonist but can't think of an organic way to solve the problem, they just give the character the ability or contrive a reason to continue the story and jump to something more "fun" giving the excuse of "just super lucky "or" she's just so awesome "
and it ended up becoming a writing addiction that Lily refused to correct

she has no interest in writing, she just wants to see herself again and again in the media that she consumes and writes so much that the way she describes herself in real life gives the sensation that she gives herself characteristics of her favorite characters (cute, kind, confident, traumatic past, angst with a golden heart and revolutionary)
no wonder no one knows the real Lily, it's all made up.

You know, it's really difficult to root for your "soft friends" when I'm aware one of those "friends" mentally raped the other when they were a minor and the other emotionally neglects their "friend" when they are perfectly aware a professional should look into their mental health, and somehow these two thought it could be all solved by adding a innocent kid into the equation.

The fact that you wrote all of that and then want to sugar coated it all with "but they're happy, see them hugging? see how happy they are" makes it all the more disturbing. If Sugar is a nazi apologist/sympathizer for not killing off the Diamonds, then what I'm left to think about you writing about this deeply unhealthy, unstable mess of a relationship and trying to tell me that it's actually fine, cute and wholesome fun? If you were honest about how fucked up it is, I'd have no issue about it, but Liliana presenting this as "soft friends supporting each other through hard times" (most of the time those hard time being the fault of the other friends) is the equivalent of someone tagging a rape fest fic as a rom com... which Liliana also did with Stockholm.

Is it just me, or is is anyone else getting annoyed at how much Lily overuses the word "soft"? With all her talk about "soft lesbians" and "soft friends" and "soft romance" I'm really starting to develope a knee-jerk dislike of the word.
Makes me think of that Robot Chicken sketch where a guy keeps raping a Teddy bear Mascot because it's "SO SOFT."

I have a project I've been developing for a couple of years on and off. Writing is a big part of it. I keep going back and changing things because I improve and grow dissatisfied with my past work.
Lilly's stance is disheartening. The act of creation is an act of self-education. Deliberate stagnation is denying the act of creation it's purpose. No, learning is not the only purpose, but it must feel hollow to create without striving to improve.

One could say it's part of his teenage mindset of hyper-fixating on something for extended periods of time until he gets bored of it. Stuff like "valid" and "babu" were that once.

Not sure why these posts were deleted, but here you go.

So according to this ...

Jerry is earning roughly $2,337 a month from Patreon. Atleast that's what I got once I added it all up. That's a nice salary considering his content is absolutely dogshit.

I don't care if the content creator is a tranny. I enjoy Sphere Hunter's content. I occasionally even like Blair White/Contrapoints. Jerry's videos are objectively terrible.
Not sure if Lily’s salary is deserved considering how a lot of her video content is plagiarised from better creators

Reminder that according to the TvTropes page Orchard's Self-Insert does like G but wants her to "grow into her own" like some trashy lost romance novel, which makes the whole "sisters" thing have actual fucking indisputable incestous feelings if Lily goes through with it for "softness" or whatever the fuck.

This actually explains why Lily put the whole "what's the reason for not fucking my animal" thing to a vote. She wasn't giving the reader choice, she was just looking for an excuse.

The part of this that's always confused me is the constant denial of fucking a pokemon. Her audience ships it, so clearly they don't care if it's fucked up, and it's not like the plot centers around her feelings for like...an Arcanine or something very 'animal.' Gardevoir is probably the single most lewded pokemon for a reason--because people can jerk off to it without feeling like a furry. She wrote the story as some kind of critique of the people who think Gardevoir is hot and pokemon porn in general. Lily wants to come out above all those perverts, but that point kinda falls flat when you hide details that Comic!Lily still very much has feelings for G and has only ever been lying about it to avoid breaking the law, laws you created for your world in the first place. How many people write a fanfic where they get cockblocked and CAN'T fuck their waifu?

It's kinda like writing a story about a pedophile who has feelings for a child that they never act upon and are very nice and supportive to the child all through their life and that's treated as very wholesome. It kinda makes the story seem pro-child love at the very least? Those are the lingering implications of Poke Madhouse--that it's okay to be in love with your pokemon, as long as that love is UwU so soft.

the thing that boggles me the most is; lily could have made a ship fick between her and g without all this crazy bullshit.

Plenty of people have the hots for certain pokemon, like gardevoir, lopunny, lucario,zoroark- any other furrybaoit poekmon here, and ive seen plenty of ship art between self-insert X Furbate mon. That shit doesnt bother me because people have their weird feitshes and anthroposexual is a term some people use apparently. you didnt need thiswhole poke-rape arc, them once being sisters now the parent ofthis monster child, orthe whole bullshit about the legality.

Why make things more complex than necissary? Not even from a weird fanfic point of view but all these uninfished/forgotten plotlines added nothing to the story.

If you wanted soft uwu stuff.

G and lily goes to the fairground and have a comic on ther day there. no villain of the week, no wesbian softness, nothing. jsut them enjoying cotton candy and roller coasters together.

Them goingout shopping to buy clothes for themselves/bonnie.

Going to the movies. etc etc.

Not
the goverment is after me because my fardevoir raped me and i have feelings for my pet whoo's actually my sister in law and i know have a weird sister-pet fetish child ohh god ohh fuck!'

Simmer down, jesus.

Like it continues to boggle me. like, as mentioned, The fans ship it, it's an in-comic joke that basically everyone basically already assumes it, There's a tabloid headline with them making out in it. When a point in the comic came up where it was explained that they were having shared lucid dreams all that Comic!Mikaila could do in response to finding out they were making out in their shared lucid dreams was making out was to laugh like an imature child.

oh and also there's this joke that's cropped up in the past 24 hours.

what sucks most is the fact that lily's admitted to the whole "I don't take any of this serious" means that I shouldn't be devoting brain power to any of this, yet I can't. because she keeps going out of her way to prod that part of my brain that reacts to inconsistencies, conflicts in plot, and you know...rape metaphors.

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but it still astounds me how much the quality of the comic is degrading over time. If I remember correctly, The Honesty arc wasn't too long ago, right? About 2-3 months ago if that, and still there's a noticeable quality difference between these two pictures. The character's have devolved even further into stick figures, and the proportions in "Honesty" were already pushing it, the mouths seem less natural and the eye's lack any semblance of energy or life, it reminds me of CTRL+ALT+DEL back in the day when Buckley literally used copy and pasted shapes and figures to make his comic. It's not quiet that bad yet, but it'll get there if Mikalia keeps going at this rate (and knowing Lily, she'd probably be all for it if it meant the comics got made quicker). Even the line work seems less smooth and dynamic now then it did a few months ago.

I know they're doing this "just for fun" and all, but I sincerely hope the Mikalia is making drawing that she puts effort in her free time or else it'll become harder and harder to push the quality of her art, even when she tries to put honest effort into it.

See I have trouble buying the "for fun" argument sometimes because of how much time Lily spends getting into slapfights with Tumblr asks over it. That and the public Wiki makes me think Lily cares about it sometimes and not so much other times.
And I understand defending your work but it's almost every other day or week some one brings something to her attention and she throws a shot fit. Hell we spent the last day or two talking about the massive rant she had about criticism. Nothing says "doing this for fun" like publicly thrashing about your haters

Most of the salient points have been made, but I wanted to weigh in on this:

Are there any others here who dabble in writing? Does this frustrate anyone else or am I crazy?
You're not crazy.

It's really absurd that she says 'It's bad because I'm just having fun'. Does she not realize that you can have fun and make something that's enjoyable for everybody to consume? That having fun doesn't in any way equate to something being bad? Writing a serialized story where you're just having fun with it will inevitably be messy, sure -- you forget details, you want to explore something different, you re-interpreted your own character and kind of forgot to tell anybody else, it's just the nature of writing isolated installments over the course of years, you as a writer will change -- but being less polished is not at all the same as being bad.

And Lily's work is bad. Even if she did nothing but write vignettes about uwu soft frens she should at least be able to make those vignettes read well. Even if she just repeats the same fixation over and over again, there's really nothing wrong with that-- if you're having fun and your audience is having fun then you've accomplished your mission. There are plenty of people out there, amateur and professional, who basically focus on one concept and just write it over and over again with tweaks and adjustments and it's a subject they really enjoy and kind of a comfort food for their audience.

None of which means it has to be bad.

To say 'it's bad because I'm just having fun' is ridiculous. If you have a baseline competence that's going to bleed through to your work. If things change it might, again, be messier than you would have liked, but it will still be decent, if not still good. Nobody is expecting professional polished quality from Lily, they're just expecting -- based on her arrogance within her critiques -- that she's at least decent.

And on the surface she's competent, in small and specific doses, but you actually start reading her work and yeah. She's bad. And it's not because I don't like her genre (news flash: you can acknowledge that something is still well-done even if it isn't your cup of tea). Her characters are shallow. Her dialogue is, when not cribbing from better sources, stilted and uninteresting. Her prose ranges from 'serviceable but boring' to 'Rey smelled the cloak. It smelled good.' Her pacing is terrible. She has fundamental problems with grammar. She misunderstands basic concepts like 'Show, Don't Tell' and she and her fans seem to think that 'romantic chemistry' specifically refers to slap-slap-kiss styles of romance, which is absolutely baffling.

She doesn't understand how to structure a story. She doesn't know how to even keep consistent PoV for the duration of a scene. And I mentioned this before, but she has an equally baffling tendency to bring up a really important character conflict or moments and then, instead of actually showing us that moment, the character will just tell somebody else what happened (and not even in a cinematic *takes a breath* "Okay" *flashback*, just-straight up "So yeah I was tortured by God") or have somebody else entirely talk about it while the character isn't even in the room.

Then she says 'well if I wanted to I could make a good story but I don't', which begs the question of why you would deliberately decide to make a bad one. Saying 'I like to write schlock' isn't a good enough excuse because there's plenty of intentionally glurgly schlock out there and it can be well-written.

Part of the problem of course is also the hypocrisy of her being a critic and then just shrugging off things she criticizes other work for because she's 'just having fun'. Now, maybe this could almost be forgiven (if we ignore the part above where she has never made any demonstrations toward the claim 'I could write well if I wanted to') because it is a very different mindset to critique something than to actually create something. Roger Ebert famously penned the screenplay to In the Valley of the Dolls and it was... not well received, in spite of all his well-earned experience as a critic. And a lot of people write bad fanfiction (sadly, while Lily is objectively a bad writer, in comparison to most things that are published on the Internet she is above average-- although there's a bit of a difference between somebody who's 27 and claims they can be a great writer versus a 13-year-old sitting down to write something outside of a school assignment for the first time). So why focus on criticizing Lily instead of just brushing her off like 90% of all work out there?

Because Lily has criticized other fanfiction.

Lily has gone out of her way to call out fanfiction written by other people -- people who were obviously not writing for publication and just 'having fun' -- and explain why those stories are bad. Most recently she mentioned some kind of epic WoW-fic revolving around Sylvanas, but she's also called out Pokemon and MLP fanfiction in the past. By her own logic, she had no right to do so because those authors were just writing for fun. You can't expect them to make something good when they're just having fun.

tl;dr
It's all about hypocrisy and Lily is just making up excuses for why she's 'allowed' to suck.
