Is there a requirement in Leafland that someone claiming defamation has to "prove" (insofar as that is possible) that the alleged defamatory statements aren't true? And can Amy in turn demonstrate that he'd had a reputation as a pedo for quite some time before their fateful meeting in the Surrey Courthouse?

No. Because of the difficulty in "proving a negative", defamation cases are reverse onus here in Canada. The Yaniv is required to prove the statements are true. Amy is not required to prove that she didn't assault Yaniv

Oh man, I wonder how much the judge will let Amy's lawyers get away with? JY himself is far too stupid to be able to notice shenanigans that even a public defender or brand new lawyer would be able to get shut down. This could get real REAL good.

Somehow I missed the part that he was representing himself. I guess I just assumed he hired the poor sap who's defending him against the criminal charges. Reading that gave me goosebumps. I think his lawyer coldheart said he was only involved with the criminal cases...So yeah....he's on his own with Amy, the waxers & the lien, the TOL, the broken bed etc.

In criminal matters, the defendant has the right to legal council, even if they can't afford it. This poor lawyer was probably assigned by the court.
There is no right to legal council for shitty civil suits. Yaniv can't afford a lawyer for this stuff. A defamation settlement would easily be $5000 in legal fees. Mounting a proper defense, 10-25,000 dollars
He's obviously not going to prove that Hamm eyeball fucked him and Miriam in the shitter, so aside from simply losing his case what kind of damages could he be looking at? I know this has been discussed a bit, but is Hamm's lawyer likely to get any reimbursement from JY for legal fees? Or is that unlikely here? I know he's doing it pro-bono, but that won't matter to the courts. It seems wrong that JY would be able to walk away from this without it costing him AT LEAST 5k for Hamm's attorney's time and effort and bit of dough for Hamm's stress.
edit: I also can't stop thinking about how he (JY) claimed he was in the bathroom stall with Miriam. WTF is a nearly 40 year old gigantic man doing in a public bathroom stall with his senior mother? Was she wiping his ass? It's only a minor point in this case, but to me it's one of the most bizarre parts of their mother-son dynamic. It makes no sense and there's no explanation for that behavior that isn't gross or deviant.
