This has probably already been mentioned but getting a license for body armor in Canada is extremely hard, if not impossible, for anyone who doesn't need it for their employment. I don't agree with this personally but I guess it has it's benefits since it stifles people like JY from larping as some private military contractor. It would be hilarious to see the fit of even the largest vest over JY's gut - they'd have to shape it like a gigantic egg to get adequate coverage.

There are only so many hours in a day, even for jonny.

Just been listening to Chris Elston on the Mark Patrone Show, talked a lot of sense. Couldn't help but compare his chat with yaniv's past telephone interviews. 
Body armor is treated in the same way as a "restricted weapon". Provincially, in most cases you need to actually own a restricted firearm in order to even be legally able to possess body armor. Restricted weapons are incredibly difficult things to jump through hoops for.
Canada has such strange rules based on the idiot Liberal Government concept that only police should have x. (be it guns, body armor, taser, what have you) all in the name of Public Safety. Because the last thing a police officer wants is to not be able to take a suspect down because the fucker was wearing a Kevlar vest or some such that'll stop wondernine ammo. It's all very pro-police (Bill Blair used to be a police chief in the hellhole of his own making, Toronto) but also very anti-citizen-self-defence.

In the US only a handful of states have restrictions on it and it's pretty much limited to not being a felon
Some older brick and mortar type online sellers may not sell with out an ID but there's so much cheap but effective body armor on the market now it doesn't matter
You must be thinking of prohibited weapons because restricted weapons are easy to get in Canada if you're able to pass the government background check. All you need to do is take an additional exam and get an authorization to transport. Storage requirements are slightly more involved but nothing that a trigger lock and a locking case can't satisfy.
