I don't want to deviate off topic, but remember Hugo Schwyzer was a thing that happened.
I don't know what is known in Kiwi world about Schwyzer, beyond the incident of creeping on his young students that eventually precipitated his downfall.
But Schwyzer had behaved in online, and in offline, feminist communities/events/spaces/works etc for YEARS in a way that was Not Cool, and he had been allowed to evade responsibility and scrutiny for that, because of this bullshit narrative that "ermagerd third/fourth wave feminism needs male allies don't scare off the bros!!!!"
Schwyzer hit on, stole work from, and slandered and abused women in these communities for years, and he got away with it because he white knighted the white middle class feminists with the big name blogs and the big platforms. (Stand up, Amanda Marcotte; he sawed your POC critics whose work you stole without attribution on more than one occasion. Stand up, Jill Filipovic, for letting him boh blog about his past as a domestic abuser and then moderate the discussion and then try to take it to personal emails)
Women without book deals were treated like shit by this Male Feminist Ally, and this kept happening until finally someone had her complaints taken seriously.
He was treated like he had magical and special insight to share with is all, because he had beaten the fuck out of his female partners in the past, but U GUISE HE STOPPED AND HE SO SORRY FAM. So he was feted like he had achieved something, instead of finally joining the basic level of humanity most of us belong to, where we don't batter the people we love.
He made plenty dolla at this. Not only that, this bullshit gave him access to young women, and women who had experienced abuse, and lo and fucking behold he used that access and his influence to get his dick wet and to make sure the bitches STFU about it or else he'd sic his Galpals with Book Deals on 'em. And oh lord, did this happen. Ever heard of brownfemipower?
It was absolute textbook infiltration of a social group by an abuser, and nothing about it was secret. Because the people Schwyzer treated like shit didn't sit at the popular lunch table in fourth wave high school.
When a man loudly identifies himself as a Male Feminist, the first question you must ask is: what is in it for him? Why does this man want access to feminist platforms and spaces? What is it that he wants to use them for? What is his great insight into feminist thought or activism that centuries of feminists have somehow failed to have?
We need to scrutinise our so called friends as closely - more closely - than random strangers we disagree with. Because the random stranger is not in a position to violate our trust. Our friends are.
