Summary:
Belgian far-right soldier leaves manifesto threatening COVID bureaucrats, steals rocket launchers and firearms from a military base and disappears into the woods, prompting a multi-nation manhunt. Thousands of soldiers and police searched for a couple weeks and could not locate Jurgen. He has now been on the run for close to a month without being caught, despite having an Interpol red notice. Basically this is a European Dorner situation.

He apparently was investigated for posting some racist and otherwise objectionable content on social media, but was still employed by the Belgian military and had access to the barracks armory.

Monday May 17:
  • Jürgen leaves a suicide note for his girlfriend, indicating that he's intending to carry out an attack and doesn't expect to survive. He specifically mentions Belgian defense minister Ludivine Dedonder and virologist Marc van Ranst.
  • Jürgen raids the barracks armory under the pretense of organizing a military exercise, taking a four rocket launchers, a P90, a Five-seveN pistol, ammo, and a bulletproof vest.
  • Jürgen's girlfriend contacts the police, initiating the manhunt.
Tuesday May 18:
  • Car found abandoned in Dilserbos (Limburg province) with the rocket launchers inside, and booby-trapped with a grenade (archive). Massive manhunt proceeds with hundreds of police and military.
  • Virologist Marc van Ranst and his close family placed in a safehouse under police protection.
Wednesday May 19:
  • Hoge Kempen National Park (archive) becomes the focus of the manhunt. The park and highway are closed to visitors and combed through by police, but this is slow as the park is ~12,500 hectares and has over 400 km of hiking trails.

  • 29-30 May 2021: A search was carried out in Stalken, Zutendaal.
  • 30 May 2021: Police officers from the Federal Police and the Special Forces again searched Dilser Forest in the Hoge Kempen National Park near Lanklaar (the forest near where his vehicle was found) with the assistance of helicopters and drones.
  • 1 June 2021: Belgian media report that, before he went AWOL, JC withdrew the maximum daily cash allowance from his account, 3,000 Euros.
  • 3 June 2021: Another search in Lanklaar, this time on an industrial estate and some residential areas. The Belgian Ministry of Defence starts proceedings to formally remove JC from his rank and position. By far the most exciting thing that happens is that a guy shows his asscrack during a live report the story.
